Captain Ericks 0 Posted October 3, 2005 Kind ofa retorical question, but does anyone think that the Vulcans and Romulans will ever be reunited? More than that, would you want to see something like that happen, or would it ruin Star Trek getting rid of a great enemy like the Romulans.
He Who Shall Not Be Named 2 Posted October 3, 2005 If there is, it will not be canon unless there is a later series or movie that deals with the aftermath of what happened in Nemesis. I don't really see that on the horizon.

HRH The KING 0 Posted October 3, 2005 It will never happen Vulcans are exposition characters who advance plots and explain things to the viewers. Romulans are antagonists who's main purpose is to create threats and problems for the main characters of a given Star Trek series to solve or deal with in whatever way. Merging the two isn't necessary.
He Who Shall Not Be Named 2 Posted October 3, 2005 One thing is fur sure. If it were to happen it would fundamentally change the balance of power in Alpha and Beta quadrants. If Vulcan were to be incorporated (willingly or by force) into the Romulan Empire the Federation would loose a key member and would be in a weakened position, and would be easy prey for a Romulan or Klingon invasion. Whichever invaded the Federation would surely go after the other power next once the new borders are consolodated. If Romulus were instead to join the Federation there would be nothing to stop us from going after the Klingons. Even if we didn't, you can bet they would be mighty scared of something bad happening to them. Quadrant politics are based on what Nixon and Kissinger called triangular diplomacy - 3 main powers that counterbalance each other so that no single power can gain a permenant upper hand. You note that throughout Trek when one government looks like it is gaining too much power the other two conspire against them. It happened with the (short-lived) Klingon-Romulan alliance in TOS, it almost happened with the Romulan aid to the House of Duras, and it happened with the Klingon aid in Unification. Captain Ericks 0 Posted October 4, 2005 That was also used in "1984". There were threee nations on Earth (Oceania, Eastasia, and Eurasia). No alliance of any two nations could over whelm the other nation, and to do so would throw off the balance of power, and throw the planet into chaos.

The Star Trek universe is a TV universe. They are one in the same. Nothing on Star Trek must happen which does not make good dramatic and narrative sense. He Who Shall Not Be Named 2 Posted October 4, 2005 That was also used in "1984". True, but even Oceania, Eurasia, and Eastasia had their roots in the United States / NATO, Soviet Union, and Communist China world order that was starting to materialize when Orwell wrote 1984 and continued throughout the Cold War that lasted right up until the dissolution of the Soviet Union. mj 7 Posted October 6, 2005 I don't think reunification is possible, without major cultural changes. Romulus is a military culture, and the Vulcans are pacifists. I think relations can improve between them, or if Romulus moves toward a less militaristic, less confrontaional society, then perhaps they could move closer. The Vulcans will not abandon their philosophy of logic, so it is the Romulus that would have to change. There was evidence of a softening of their culture in Nemesis. I think that it is possible to come up with new and challenging villains if the Romulan society continues to open up. It could be an interesting way to develop Star Trek for the future. The dinamic ofthe Galaxy would change, but it would all return to normal. Just like when the Federation comes together, making allies of the Vulcans, Andorians, and Tellarites (all of whom were once on the verge of war at one point or another). There is still a lot of galaxy left and a lot more "antagonists" to discover. Things change. Alliances form. And there are always more bad guys. Merging the two isn't necessary Neither were-- -the Borg -Data -Georgi's blindness -the Dominion -the Dominion War -the Wormhole -a Klingon (Worf) joining Starfleet -Voyager getting pulled across the galaxy -many, many more things None of these were neccessary. But they served as major parts of Star Trek. They brought new threats and a new struggles into the Universe of Star Trek. An attempt to re-unifiy Vulcan and Romulan cultures would be the same thing.
