Sometimes-People do rise above themselves

Recommended Posts

So we often we read stories about the worst things people do - what parents do to children. This story just broke my heart in a different way - I know how much burns hurt and that poor little baby - but I can just imagine the horror the mother must have felt. Sadly, I wonder if the little one will make it.

Mom burned trying to save son

By Robert Morris

LAKE COMO — A pregnant woman was severely burned while trying to save her 9-month-old son from a Tuesday evening house fire.

The toddler was in critical condition and his mother in stable but guarded condition at a Shands hospital burn center in Gainesville at press time, officials said. The house was heavily damaged and the state fire marshal's office is helping investigate the cause of the blaze, though Putnam County Fire Marshal Joe Guidry said arson was not suspected.

Jennifer Hersbruner, 33, was in the kitchen of the Huntington Shortcut Road home while her two sons, Harley Bangert, 3, and Levi Bangert, 9 months, slept in a corner bedroom around 5:40 p.m. when the fire started, Guidry said. The father, Lewis Bangert, had not yet returned home from his work cutting trees.

Harley told his mother about the fire and she rushed in to save Levi, scooping him out of his burning crib and suffering burns to her face and hands, Guidry said. Hersbruner then emerged from the burning house with the baby in her arms and handed him to neighbors Troy and Tammy Hodges. Guidry said the boy was described as having second- and third-degree burns over most of his body.

I feel for them.

Two children in my town died in a block of flats (twins to the ones I grew up in) because the fire door was jammed for like 2 years, maintainance is all not our fault about it. The neighbours tried everything they could, as did the mother who was over come by smoke inhalation.

I hope the outcome to this particular story is th 180 of the story in my area. My thoughts and prayers go out to them.

I'm about to start crying now...but this proves that mothers really will risk anything for their children. I really hope the baby makes it, There is nothing worse for a mother than to have to bury a child, especially one so young.
