TrekkieMage 0 Posted June 29, 2003 Oooooh! :) I'm gonna have to show that to my mom! She loves stuff like this! For months she'd go to the National Archives on her lunch break and read old letters and documents from our relitives around the Civil War era...They are so interestin! It's like a window into the past...I'll read those letters when I've got a little more time...Thank you UnicornHunter!!!
VaBeachGuy 12 Posted March 27, 2008 I know this post is OLD but it just brought to mind that my family has some civil war letters from family members. My uncle took them to the Smithsonian, the letters were complete with envelope and stamp. He left them there and when he went back to get them the most valuable parts (to collectors) were gone. The envelopes w/stamps. You'd think they'd have been safe at the Smithsonian. At least we got the family history part back, the actual letters. My family, on my mothers side came from that soldier. He and 5 brothers were all fighting and were together when a cannon shot exploded killing 4 of the 5 brothers and of course I come from the 5th. I've always thought it was amazing how history can change just by where someone is standing on a field at one instant. If he was standing where one of his brothers was then I wouldn't be here right now.
Theunicornhunter 2 Posted March 27, 2008 Maybe someone at the Smithsonian was starting a private collection - that's a shame. I'd forgotten about this thread - I just went back and read another letter. I'm not such a good letter writer - I think it is a lost art.

Sometimes I look at the Online Users list and I'll see one of the spiders indexing an old thread that I had missed before, so that's how I came upon this one. Thanks to the Google Spider lol
