David Boring, isn’t.

Given that the film industry’s plundering of comic books is set to continue for the foreseeable future, it’s good to know that it works both ways. At last, people are now coming round to Daniel Clowes, by way of Terry Zwigoff’s film of “Ghost World”. Clowes’ new hero, David Jupiter Boring, is as tortured and full of ennui as Ghost World’s Enid, continuing his dry-witted yet insightful dissection of suburban life.

Boring is as ironic as his name - a tortured, wry obsessive whose encounter with the girl of his dreams sends him off into a revelation about life, love, death, and all their meanings. Clowes litters his writing with self-conscious quirks, such as addressing the reader directly, and his monochrome artwork is detailed without being cluttered, deserving a reading on its own. Who said comics were for kids?
