I agree with Picard, it was a mix, Stalin and Lenin didn't handle the government well. And Communism in such a large country, I don't think just one ruler could handle that...

The basic tenants of comunisum are good in principal but unfortunatly it dosn't work and Stalin - lenin where allso very paranoid. and if any of you have read animal farm that is the ulitmate take on what Comunisum is "Every one is Equal. But some are more equal than others" But I digress my answer to the question is that I agree with the others it's a mix

Could it not be argued that dictators such as Stalin halted an chance of Communism achieving success and that, had leaders not been concerned with their own status and political manovering, then a true Communist state could have been achieved.

I believe that was becasue of the rulers, not the priniples of communmisim. Communisim is not by itself evil (I can't say it is the best society either) but no true communisim has ever really existed. Those were all dictatorships pretending to be communists.
