O'Brien is working diligently to correct issues with the stations systems. At the insistence of Sisko he begins working to repair the command level replicators. O'Brien is able to repair them, but in the process he inadvertently activates a device that was patched into the replicator system. In testing the replicator repairs, O'Brien drinks a beverage from the replicator and shortly after begins speaking in gibberish. He is examined by Bashir who determines that he has been infected with a form of aphasia causing him to be unable to express himself verbally to others. Other members of the staff, beginning with Dax, then begin to contract the virus. Sisko then quarantines the station to prevent the virus from spreading.

While investigating the cause of the virus the device is discovered in the replicator systems. It is determined that the device was planted during the Cardassian occupation by the Bajoran resistance. Kira then begins investigating to locate the creator of the virus in order to gain assistance in finding a cure. Odo finds that Quark has been using a replicator in one of the vacant crew to create his entire menu for his bar, thus spreading the virus to the general population of the station. Bashir then runs a scan and finds that the virus has mutated and became airborne.

Kira is able to track down Surmak Ren, a scientist who was part of the former Bajoran resistance, who she believes had a part in creating the virus. Kira contacts Surmak, who closes the transmission when the virus is mentioned. Kira then takes a runabout to Bajor and beams Surmak aboard from orbit. Surmak demands to be returned to Bajor, but Kira informs him that by being in her presence he is now infected with the virus. Surmak then agrees to return to DS9 with her to work on creating a cure for the virus.

Sisko begins to show signs of infection while trying to stop a freighter captain from leaving the station and breaking the quarantine. Odo must in list the help of Quark in blowing the docking clamps to allow the freighter to clear the station to avoid it's destruction. After arriving on the station Surmak Ren is able to devise a cure for the virus before any deaths occur.
