Jim Phaserman 0 Posted February 28, 2005 60 years ago this month (on the 13, to be exact, is when it started), the United States Marine Corps launched an invasion of a small island in the Pacific. that Island was called Iwo Jima. the battle lasted 36 days and cost the lives of 6,000 US Marines, making it the bloodiest battle in the Corps' History. the Battle is imortalised forever in a picture taken from Mount Suribachi, which later became the statue you will see below. the taking of Iwo Jima hastened the end of the Second World War.
