Thanks for posting all of those, UH and WAB.

I'm planning to donate, but it'll probably be through an organization not listed (Samaritan's Purse).

I found another website. Interaction

As I've read various reports - it's clear that a leadership that can assess need and assure that contributions are used efficiently is important. I hope all the governments, relief agencies etc can work together on this and we don't get into any "territory" squabbles.

As I've read some articles about the web my fears are somewhat justified. There are some very long lists of organizations. Here is yet another list - a short list so to speak - of organizations shown to be able to act quickly according the publisher of the site.

I had made my donation to the American Red Cross Disaster Relief. I only donate to organizations that I have heard and trust.

As I suspected - talking heads have now moved into the "my donation's bigger than your donation" phase. I was listening to one UN representative criticize rich nations. The journalist pointed out that for the US - private sector donations were nearly twice what government donations had been in prior disasters and asked why private charities weren't included in his appraisal. I didn't hear everything he said but somehow he felt tax money was better than private money.

I have to disagree - I think some private charities manage money much better than many governments do. However, the big toys like helicopters etc are a big assistance to the aid program right now.

Odie, you are correct - you should only donate to organizations you know are legit.

I've also noted various stories in the news about people collecting "things" for the survivors. Most of the major charities that deal with disasters will tell you they really need cash more than clothing etc. They can use the cash to buy goods from local economies (who need they help) and don't have to spend time and/or money shipping supplies or devote volunteers to sorting which takes them away from other needed tasks. And these organizations have assessment teams that can determine what supplies are necessary. The organiztion I gave to listed some of its actions which included supplying body bags because that was what the governments had requested of them.

Some of these projects collecting things are led by children and I know you don't want to discourage them but on the other hand shouldn't we teach them the difference between trying to help and really helping?
