Happy St. Patrick's Day

Recommended Posts

They say in the US everyone is honorary Irish on March 17th. I've heard it's a bigger party here than in Ireland but don't know for sure. A lot certainly pretend they're Irish that day but there are quite a few Americans that have at least one Irish ancestor. I did find one Irish ancestor that was born in Belfast abt 1710 and I have a few Scotch-Irish ancestors.

You can always read "How the Irish Saved Civilization" - I thought it was an interesting book.

Okay...you get stuck reading the my recollection of a St. Patrick's Day poem I memorized in the fourth grade (even though I probably do not have any Irish blood...) which I like to try to recall every St. Patrick's Day! It was part of a special presentation my class did for St. Patrick's over the intercom system in our school, which was what was done on special holidays when school was in session. I had exactly one line, but I loved the whole poem, so I memorized it.....I think.

St. Patrick drove the serpants out of Ireland,

So 'tis said.

From here and there and round about,

From Cork to Mainlandhead

He banished all the snakes there were,

Except for one that would not stir

Except for one that would not leave,

And sure 'n' it made St Patrick grieve!

St. Patrick drove the serpants out of Ireland

So they claim.

From here and there and round about

It brought St. Patrick fame.

He cast the serpants in the sea

Except for one that would not flee

Except for one that would not drown,

And sure 'n' it made St. Patrick frown.

St. Patrick was a canny man

A prudent man, they state.

And so he conjured up a plan.

He built a box-like crate

And sweetly asked the serpant in.

The serpant stroked it's satin skin

And wouldn't try the box at all

But said " For me, its much too small!"

St. Patrick was a....?....man,

Subtle, so they tell.

He coaxed the serpant.

"Faith, you'll fit very very well.

I'm sure you can, with room to spare."

"I can't! You know I can't! So there!"

"You can."

"I can't!"

"You know I'm right."

"You're wrong!"

They argued day and night.

St. Patrick had a mighty voice,

Persuasive so they state.

It made the Emerald Isle rejoice

To hear the great debate!

"You'll fit the box!"

"I won't at all!"

"It's plenty big!"

'It's pinchy small!"

"Unless you prove it, I am right!"

"I'll show you then! The box is tight!"

St. Patrick watched the serpant glide into the box

Tis told.

And when it mostly was inside

The canny saint made bold

To close the lid and tie it tight

And throw the box with all his might

Upon the waves that rolled away.

And sure 'n' it made St. Ptrick gay (happy).

St. Patrick drove the serpants out of Ireland

So 'tis said.

From here and there and round about

From Cork to Mainlandhead

He banished all the snakes there were,

Including one that would not stir

Including one that left the isle all boxed and tied in state and style,

And sure 'n' it made St. Patrick smile!

I now try do this on St. Patrick's Day, even if I don't wear green!:laugh::laugh::laugh:
