  1. I saw this on another forum site and just had to post it...

Here's hope for the geek and nerd in all of us....a friend of mine sent this to me, and I'm sharing it with those of you...

In the wide world of dating, there are many options. Do you go for the flashy guy with the smooth smile, or the dude in the corner typing away on his laptop? The following are reasons why I think my fellow females should pay more attention to the quiet geeks and nerds, and less attention to the flashy boys.

1.) While geeks and nerds may be awkward, they’re well-meaning 9 out of 10 times. That smooth dude with the sly grin and the spider hands? Wonder what HIS intentions are... plus, I’ve never had a geek guy not call me when he said he would. Score major points THERE.

2.) They’re useful. In this tech-savvy world, it’s great to have a b/f who can make your laptop, desktop, and just about anything else that plugs into a wall behave itself.

3.) They’re more romantic than they’re given credit for. Ok true, their idea of romance might be to make up a spiffy web-page with all the reasons why they love you, with links to pics of you and sonnets and such... but hey. It lasts longer than flowers, plus you can show your friends.

4.) Due to their neglected status, there are plenty to choose from. You like ‘em tall and slender? There are plenty of geeks/nerds who are. You like ‘em smaller with more meat on their bones? Got that too.

5.) They’ve got brains. Come on now, how can intelligence be a bad thing?

6.) Most are quite good at remembering dates. Like birthdates and such, especially if they know it’ll make you happy. Due again to their neglected status, they’re more attentive than guys who “have more options”. Plus, with all that down time without a steady girlfriend, they’ll likely have mental lists of all the things they’d love to do once they GOT a girlfriend.

7.) Sex. Yep. Sex. I’m not really familiar with this myself, but I’ve friends who’ve been intimate with geek guys and it’s raves all around. They say a virgin wrote the Kama Sutra... all that time thinking about sex, imagining sex, dreaming about sex, (they are male after all) coupled with a desire to make you happy? Use your imagination.

8.) They’re relatively low-maintenance. Most can be fueled on pizza, Twinkies and Mt Dew. No complicated dinners needed here, so if you’re not the best cook, eh. Can you order a pizza?

9.) Most frequent bars as often as slugs frequent salt mines. You won’t have to worry much about your geek guy getting his “groove” on with club hotties because, frankly, he’ll be too busy rooting around under his computer wondering where that spare cable went. You won’t have to worry about him flirting with other women because, 9 out of 10 times, he’ll zip right by them in a perfect b-line towards the nearest electronics store. I’ve seen this happen.

Me: “Eww. Victoria Secret’s Models... They’re so skinny. How is that feminine? You can see her ribs!”

    Geek Guy: “ooooooo...”

Me: “Hey!” *notices he is staring lustfully towards the computer store*

    Geek Guy: “What?”

    Me: “Never mind...”

10.) Although he may not want to go to every outing with you, you can arrange swaps, as in, you’ll go to his Gamer Con dressed as an elf princess if he’ll take you to the ballet. Plus, if he doesn’t want to go someplace with you, you won’t have to worry much about what he’s up to. You’ll probably come home to find him asleep on his keyboard in a sea of Mt. Dew cans with code blinking from the screen. It’s ok. He’s used to this. Just toss a blanket over him and turn out the light.

11.) His friends aren’t jerks. I can’t stress this enough. You’ll more likely get “Omg! A GIRL!! Can I see?!” than “Hey hot stuff back that *buttocks* up here and let me get some grub on...” They’re awkward geeks too and will, 9 times out of 10, treat you with the utmost respect and, more than likely, a note of awe. A cute girl picked one of their clan to date? It could happen to them! Hope! Drag some of your single girlfriends over, open up a pack of Mt. Dew, crack open the DnD set and get working. Nothing impresses geek guys more than a girl who can hack-n-slash (well ok maybe if she can code... a geek can dream).

12.) They’re rarely if ever possessive. They trust you, so you can be yourself around them. You like to walk around the house in a ratty t-shirt for comfort? He won’t care. He does too! They won’t get pissy if you don’t wear make-up or don’t want to bother primping your hair. If you gain a few pounds, they won’t try their best to make you feel like crap.

13.) They’re usually very well educated. Physics majors and the like. See #5. You won’t have to listen to him blathering on about his car (ok maybe a little), he’ll have loads of other interesting things to talk about. Politics, world events, how much the chicken burgers down at the local place rock, so long as you douse them in hot sauce...

14.) You’ll almost never have to hear, “Yaw dawg whazzap!!” plop out of their mouths. Unless it’s in jest. They spell properly, use correct punctuation, and are able to tell the difference between the toilet and the floor. They almost never get “wasted”, so you won’t have to worry about coming home to find him and his friends passed out on the floor amidst a pile of beer bottles. Mt. Dew cans, perhaps...

15.) And the final reason why geeks and nerds make great boyfriends: They actually give a damn about you. Not how you look (though that’s a plus), not how skinny you are, not how much make-up you primp yourself up with, but they like you for you. That kind of thing lasts longer than “DaMN baby you got a fine *buttocks*!!!” Believe me.

  2. I haven't posted in my log since who knows when, but anyone that knows me they know I'm in my 2nd year of college. With how some things have been I am just going to take a break from classes today. I want to make sure all my homework is done, I have my online computer class to work on, labs to finish, and take home test to get done, and I just found out the plumbing in my place just flooded the deli below me. My day of is a work holiday...

  3. Apple shipped some iPods with computer virus

    October 18, 2006

    By Associated Press apple_ipod_101806.jpg

SAN JOSE, CALIF. - In another example of how mobile gadgets can carry malicious programs, Apple Computer Inc. said a fraction of its iPod players sold in the past month contained a virus that affects Windows systems.

The problem affected less than 1 percent of the video iPods that were available for purchase after Sept. 12, according to a posting on Apple's technical support Web site. The company has received less than 25 reports concerning the problem, Apple said.

The iPods got the virus from a Windows computer at one of its manufacturing plants, Apple said. The virus, RavMonE.exe, is known to spread through external data storage devices when they are connected to computers and affects only machines running the Windows operating system from Apple rival Microsoft Corp. Security experts say the virus opens up further security holes for hackers.

Up-to-date anti-virus software included with most Windows computers should detect and remove it, Apple said.

Though the iPods themselves are not affected, nor are Apple's Mac OS computers, Apple recommended that iPod owners use its latest iTunes program to remove the virus from their new devices.

Other iPod models were not affected and all video iPods now shipping are virus-free, the company said.

"As you might imagine, we are upset at Windows for not being more hardy against such viruses, and even more upset with ourselves for not catching it," the company stated.

    Desperation is not good planning

    October 16, 2006

    By Ken Schram ken_schram.jpg

SEATTLE - Desperation is not good planning.

Students in a school district outside Fort Worth, Texas are being told they should fight back if and when an armed intruder shows up in the classroom.

The Burleson School District has hired a British Army Major to instruct kids - and teachers - on how they should throw books and anything else they can get their hands on.

The program is called "Response Options" and involves kids and teachers attacking an armed intruder as soon as he enters their classroom.

They're told to run at the gunman, grab him by the legs, stab him with pens and pencils, throw stuff at his head, and scream the whole time.

    This is lunacy.

I don't care how frightened or concerned parents are about the kind of school violence we've seen. This is not an answer.

I don't care if it's in Burleson, Texas or Bellevue, Washington, this is nuts.

If this is the best that adults can come up with to protect kids from the type of violence we saw in Pennsylvania last week; if telling little Tiffany or Ryan to tackle some 200 pound animal who's armed with a semi-automatic pistol or rifle is considered anything other than stupid, senseless desperation, then this country is in far worse trouble than any of us can possibly imagine.

  5. North Korea says nuclear weapons test 'successful'

    October 8, 2006

    By Associated Press n_korea_missiles_100806.jpg

SEOUL, SOUTH KOREA - North Korea said Monday it has performed its first-ever nuclear weapons test and the blast had been successfully set off underground with no radioactive leakage from the site.

An official at South Korea's seismic monitoring center confirmed a magnitude-4.2 tremor felt at the time North Korea said it conducted the test was not a natural occurrence. The official spoke to The Associated Press on condition his name not be used, because he was not authorized to talk about the sensitive information to the media.

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said that information still needs to collected and analyzed to determine whether North Korea truly conducted its first nuclear test.

U.S. and South Korean officials could not immediately confirm the report.

South Korea's Defense Ministry said the alert level of the military had been raised in response to the claimed nuclear test.

The North said last week it would conduct a test, sparking regional concern and frantic diplomatic efforts aimed at dissuading Pyongyang from such a move. North Korea has long claimed to have nuclear weapons, but had never before performed a known test to prove its arsenal.

The North's official Korean Central News Agency said the underground test was performed successfully.

"It marks a historic event as it greatly encouraged and pleased the ... people that have wished to have powerful self-reliant defense capability," the KCNA statement said.

"It will contribute to defending the peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula and in the area around it."

South Korean intelligence officials said the seismic wave had been detected in North Hamkyung province, according to South Korea's Yonhap news agency. It said the test was conducted at 10:36 a.m. (9:36 p.m. EDT Sunday) in Hwaderi near Kilju city on the northeast coast, citing defense officials.

North Korean scientists "successfully conducted an underground nuclear test under secure conditions," the KCNA report said, adding this was "a stirring time when all the people of the country are making a great leap forward in the building of a great prosperous powerful socialist nation."

The U.S. Geological Survey said it had detected no seismic activity in North Korea, although it was not clear whether a blast would be strong enough for its sensors.

On Sunday night, U.S. government officials said a wide range of agencies were looking into the report of the nuclear test, which officials were taking seriously.

South Korean President Roh Moo-hyun has convened a meeting of security advisers over the issue, Yonhap reported, and intelligence over the test has been exchanged between concerned countries.

Kyodo News agency reported that the Japanese government has set up a taskforce in response to reports of the test.

The North has refused for a year to attend international talks aimed at persuading it to disarm. The country pulled out of the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty in 2003 after U.S. officials accused it of a secret nuclear program, allegedly violating an earlier nuclear pact between Washington and Pyongyang.

Speculation over a possible North Korean test arose earlier this year after U.S. and Japanese reports cited suspicious activity at a suspected underground test site.

  6. I just got Internet Explorer 7 and now I can't use some of the top links because they get covered by the STF.net random picture. I'm not sure why this is happeneing, or what other problems this will cause. I also went to my own site and some text wasn't where it should be. I think IE7 uses different HTML coding standards then IE6... what this means it's going to be a pain in the butt for website makers over the next year or so update to whatever Microsoft is using now.

  7. You turned down free tickets to the Seattle Con????

    <_<

WHY IN THE WORLD WOULD YOU DO THAT?????

I didn't have the money to get back and forth to the con, nor could I find a hotel in Seattle close by in my price range. Trust me... I already hate myself for turning it down. The ticket was for all three day, dinner on the Space Needle, and would have been my first con... Also, I chickened out...

  8. Forty years of history and I've only lived through half of it. I think Star Trek will live on forever bexause it stands for what he hope to become. Look at almost every future type Sci-Fi show and, most the time, humans mess up and things are wrose then they are now(hard to believe that, hu?), and it's up to a person or small group of people to fix it. Star Trek shows that if all us come together there is a chance we might be able to do more. The road there will have bumbs along the way, but once there who knows what we can do. This is one of the reasons I like Star Trek so much... it shows hope for the future even now with all the worrie in the world. Star Trek is a story of hope for mankind, but an idea of what we might become... and you can never kill an idea, at least a good one...
