Star Trek‘s Zoë Saldana is in talks to play the female lead in a new science fiction movie.

The movie is Guardians of the Galaxy, and Saldana would take on the role of alien Gamora.

In Guardians of the Galaxy, Gamora, a green-skinned humanoid assassin, is the last member of a species wiped out by the Badoon race.

Others signed for Guardians of the Galaxy include Chris Pratt as Star-Lord and Dave Bautista as Drax the Destroyer. Other characters in the movie include Groot, a giant tree-man, and Rocket Raccoon, a “genetically engineered animal with a knack for guns and explosives.”

Directed by James Gunn, Guardians of the Galaxy expects to begin production in June, with a projected August 2014 release date.

When casting first began for J.J. Abrams‘ rebooted Star Trek franchise, Chris Pine was definitely not interested.

Pine told Esquire UK that at the time, he “wasn’t a fan of Star Trek” and “it didn’t excite me.”

According to Pine, he wanted “a part that I really connected to and when my agent said Star Trek, I said ‘No! Have you not been hearing anything I’ve said? Star Trek is the furthest thing from what I want to do.’”

But Pine was persuaded by his agent, and his thoughts then turned to taking on the iconic Captain Kirk role. “Star Trek scared me a lot,” he said. “It terrified me, really. Because of the scale, the responsibility, the fact that it was this iconic character. It was the bigger challenge. So I had to take it.”

Four new original series prints by Juan Ortiz have been released.

The prints this month are based on the: The Doomsday Machine, Patterns of Force, Elaan of Troyius, and The Paradise Syndrome episodes.

Ortiz spoke about his latest artwork, confessing that one of the four is his favorite. “Having watched [Elaan of Troyius] again during my research, I discovered what a great episode it actually is.”

The artist was unable to use France Nuyen‘s likeness on the poster though. “My original design had the likeness of [Nuyen], but because of legal issues, I had to change her features,” said Ortiz.

The posters, 18″x24″, sell as a set of four for $34.95 and can be purchased here.

  4. Cumberbatch031813.gif

Rumors have swirled around the Internet regarding the identity of Benedict Cumberbatch‘s villain, and one site claims to have the answer as to John Harrison’s true identity.

    Spoilers are behind the cut.

According to Shockya, which claims “trusted sources,” the villain is indeed Khan, as many have speculated over the past few months. “He is called John Harrison at points in the film, but during a key scene where Harrison is held prisoner on the Enterprise, he does reveal to Kirk and crew that his true identity is Khan,” said Shockya.

In addition to that bit of information, supposedly the famous reactor scene in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan will be referenced in the new movie, but with a “reverse spin” put on the scene.

Treat this as a rumor, and of course, everything is denied by Paramount, and by various actors in the movie.

  5. ShatnerTexas040213.gif

A group of fans in Dallas failed to break the Guinness World Record for people dressed as Star Trek characters.

The fans were attending a Texas Lottery event where the draws were the appearance of William Shatner as host of the event, and the attempt to set the world record.

Shatner appeared at the Dallas Convention Center to help unveil a new Star Trek scratch-off lottery game. “Those few dollars added to a few others go to a great purpose,” he said of the new game. “So you might win a lot of money… but if you don’t, you’ve put a little money into a bank account, which is the children of Texas.”

The world record of 1,063 fans dressed as Star Trek characters was set last year in London. The Texas event drew five hundred-and-sixty fans dressed as Trek characters.

Although they didn’t set a new world record, some lucky fans walked away with prizes from drawings held at the event.

For many Star Trek: Enterprise fans, the show ended way too soon, and a group of fans, led by Doug Drexler, are hoping to bring a fifth season to Netflix.

“The voyages of the NX-01, with Captain Archer, Trip, T’Pol, and the rest of the crew ended just as the show was finally beginning to get it’s legs,” said Drexler. “Nearly all of us agree that the fourth and prematurely final season of Enterprise demonstrated that this show was a late bloomer.”

Drexler explained that it is now possible to create original programming without going through broadcast or cable television. “A new day has dawned for the way television is produced,” he said. “No longer do three networks decide what you get to watch. It started with cable. A place where the audience pays for the shows they love by subscribing. Now the next huge step has taken place. The ability to stream the shows you want, when you want them, from the Internet. Today, Netflix, Hulu, Kickstarter, and Amazon are challenging the way television is funded, and the way it is decided what gets made.

“Interesting things have happened in the last year. Netflix began producing original programming, bringing back popular shows that the stodgy old programming model had done away with. Arrested Development is back in production. House of Cards with Kevin Spacey is doing well. The producer of Veronica Mars raised three million dollars on Kickstarter to make a movie from a show that the network thought no one watched.”

Drexler would like the see a fifth season whose story line features the Romulan War. To do so, fans need to watch Enterprise on Netflix to raise the numbers and get Netflix‘s attention, and to share a FB page, located here.

Several magazines recently have featured Star Trek into Darkness, and fans can see online scans of three of them now.

The magazines are the April issue of Star Trek magazine and Cinemania, and the May issue of Empire.

In the Star Trek magazine, “Darkness is about to fall.” Alex Kurtzman and Damon Lindelof talk about Harrison and his motives, and the challenge of creating a good story in the alternate Star Trek universe created in the first movie.

Cinemania is a Spanish-language magazine, and their article features plenty of pictures of the actors and movie scenes.

The May issue of Empire also features pictures from the movie, including a battle-damaged Enterprise.

The article in Empire discusses the beginning of the rebooted franchise, and how the creators wanted to make Star Trek rival Star Wars in “terms of grandeur and adventure.” The article then moves on to the present movie, and Alex Kurtzman and Chris Pine describe the pressure of getting the new movie right. Other actors in the movie describe their working relationships with each other and with J.J. Abrams.

Peter Duryea, best-known to original series fans, has passed away at the age of seventy-three.

Duryea portrayed Lt. Jose Tyler in The Cage, the original pilot for Star Trek.

Duryea followed his father Dan Duryea into acting, with roles in thirty television shows, including guest appearances on Dr. Kildare, Bewitched, Daniel Boone, Gomer Pyle: USMC, Adam-12 and Dragnet, and six movies.

In 1964, he was cast as Lt. Jose Tyler for The Cage. “[Star Trek] reminded me of a western, but set in the future and it was very interesting,” said Duryea in a 2001 interview. “I was among the other many, many people who auditioned. I was really happy to be part of it and took the job really seriously. I can remember long talks with the director, Robert Butler, how to do the part.”

Duryea left acting in 1973 and moved his family to Canada, where he became an environmentalist and an activist. He founded the Kootenay Lake Players, a children’s theater collective. “Having come from Hollywood, this was a delightful change for me,” said Duryea.

Duryea is survived by his partner Janice Bryan, his daughter Star, and his brother Richard.

On Saturday night, the Star Trek logo appeared over London skies.

Paramount took part in the World Wildlife Foundation’s (WWF) International Earth Hour event in London by using quadrocopters to form the Federation logo in the sky.

Earth Hour is an event coordinated by the WWF which takes place around the world to raise awareness about climate change. During the hour, landmarks and cities switch off their lights.

Powered by green energy, quadrocopters rose three hundred feet into the sky to form the logo near London’s Tower Bridge.

“WWF is delighted that Paramount is supporting this year’s Earth Hour event,” said Kellie Rollings of the WWF. “Millions of people around the world take part in Earth Hour year on year and we’re always looking for innovative ways to get our message out there. It’s fantastic that Paramount has chosen to mark the hour by dimming their lights at this unusual light display.”
