Sun Apr 18 14:56:37 2004: master_q [0/] Msg:For those that don't know, what Trekkies 2 is all about; can you explain to them what Trekkies 2 is?

Sun Apr 18 14:56:38 2004: trekkies2 [0/] Msg:I'm just getting over a long week trying to finish Trekkies 2 for the beginning of our festival screenings.

Sun Apr 18 14:57:06 2004: trekkies2 [0/] Msg:Got it done in time. But was quite a challenge. We had over 150 hours of footage.

Sun Apr 18 14:57:38 2004: trekkies2 [0/] Msg:Imagine how line it would take just to sit and watch that many hours of footage. And then to figure out how to put it all together in a cohesive whole.

Sun Apr 18 14:57:51 2004: Khalestra [0/] Msg:Who is for everything from Germany?

Sun Apr 18 14:58:53 2004: trekkies2 [0/] Msg:There were about 20 hours from Germany alone. We shot a lot at Fed-Con and in Heiger. And some in Munich.

Sun Apr 18 15:00:38 2004: master_q [0/] Msg:(This really ties into what you were saying, but.....) When making it -- what were you looking for? What did you want Trekkies 2 to bring out and *highlight*?

Sun Apr 18 15:00:41 2004: trekkies2 [0/] Msg:Then we went to France by train.

Sun Apr 18 15:00:57 2004: master_q [0/] Msg:It must have been an adventure!

Sun Apr 18 15:01:12 2004: trekkies2 [0/] Msg:The biggest difference this time, aside from traveling to the different countries, was...

Sun Apr 18 15:01:30 2004: trekstampguy [0/] Msg:Will Trekkies2 go to theaters or cable TV before it goes to dvd?

Sun Apr 18 15:01:46 2004: trekkies2 [0/] Msg:We wanted to ask the fans a few "controversial" questions that arose after the first film.

Sun Apr 18 15:01:51 2004: mrskirk [0/] Msg:not now tsg..

Sun Apr 18 15:02:02 2004: master_q [0/] Msg:I see.

Sun Apr 18 15:02:12 2004: master_q [0/] Msg:After seeing and meeting so many fans how would you describe the Star Trek fan-base?.....And how would you compare that to the stereotypical description of the preconceived idea of who the fans are?

Sun Apr 18 15:02:26 2004: trekkies2 [0/] Msg:For example, we were somtimes criticized for focusing on the "extreme" fans and now showing enough "normal" fans.

Sun Apr 18 15:03:08 2004: trekkies2 [0/] Msg:We wanted to ask the fans themselves to define what is too extreme for a fan and what they consider "normal" behavior for a fan.

Sun Apr 18 15:03:28 2004: master_q [0/] Msg:Yeah, lol . I would imagine that would be a part of it. It falls right into the extremes vs. the normal fans

Sun Apr 18 15:03:36 2004: trekkies2 [0/] Msg:The stereotype is based on the most visible fans, who are often the most extreme.

Sun Apr 18 15:03:53 2004: trekkies2 [0/] Msg:This is what Brannon Braga told us on that subject:

Sun Apr 18 15:03:53 2004: master_q [0/] Msg:That makes sense

Sun Apr 18 15:04:34 2004: trekkies2 [0/] Msg:"If you were to make a documentary on what the majority of the ST fans were like it would probably make a pretty boring documentary."

Sun Apr 18 15:05:31 2004: master_q [0/] Msg:So you wanted to expand on the side of the more 'extreme fans'

Sun Apr 18 15:05:41 2004: trekkies2 [0/] Msg:If you made a doc about sports fans, you wouldn't focus on the average players, you would focus on the exceptional players. So I think Exceptional is a better word than Extreme to descripe the fans we profiled this time. Willi is a great example of that.

Sun Apr 18 15:06:11 2004: master_q [0/] Msg:Ok

Sun Apr 18 15:06:24 2004: master_q [0/] Msg:Because you went overseas in Trekkies 2 ---- Do you see any major differences between the fans here in the u.s. compared to other places?

Sun Apr 18 15:06:35 2004: trekkies2 [0/] Msg:I think it's exceptional the fact that the fans do charity work as a part of their fandom. WIlli told us about how he works to raise money for aids children, and that's in the film.

Sun Apr 18 15:06:45 2004: KmelK517 [0/] Msg:Q'Plagh

Sun Apr 18 15:07:05 2004: master_q [0/] Msg:Well, that's good

Sun Apr 18 15:07:17 2004: trekkies2 [0/] Msg:Each country had it's differences and I could tell you about some of those. But they all had one thing in common...

Sun Apr 18 15:07:51 2004: trekkies2 [0/] Msg:No matter where we went, you could take ST fans from any country and put them all in a room and they would all belong.

Sun Apr 18 15:08:29 2004: master_q [0/] Msg:I definitely could see that

Sun Apr 18 15:08:39 2004: trekkies2 [0/] Msg:Because despite any difference, they all share a similar philosophy, as a group of people, and it's the same as Gene Roddenberry's philosophies behind the show.

Sun Apr 18 15:09:27 2004: trekkies2 [0/] Msg:They are a group of very positive people. I find that much more interesting than the negativity that pervades some other groups of people.

Sun Apr 18 15:10:48 2004: trekkies2 [0/] Msg:One thing my producer, Mike Leahy said, was that no matter where we went to shoot for the doc, we knew there would always be people we could trust who would be meeting us at the airport.

Sun Apr 18 15:11:55 2004: trekkies2 [0/] Msg:There is a country that the US bombed 4 or 5 years ago. So we were a little nervous about going there, hoping they wouldn't have an risidual animosity against Americans and take it out on us.

Sun Apr 18 15:14:11 2004: trekkies2 [0/] Msg:We learned a lot about how pervasive the message of a TV show can be. Everywhere there is television, there are ST fans. A good idea takes root, no matter where you plant it.

Sun Apr 18 15:14:46 2004: trekkies2 [0/] Msg:This show is just one of those special ideas that people respond to everywhere.

Sun Apr 18 15:15:18 2004: master_q [0/] Msg:Yeah, it is pretty amazing. Just in this chat room ---- we have people from the u.s. and from places like Germany.

Sun Apr 18 15:15:31 2004: trekkies2 [0/] Msg:The Serbians grabbed onto the hope the show provides for a brighter future, while they were in the middle of oppression, a crisis, a war, a famine...

Sun Apr 18 15:15:46 2004: trekkies2 [0/] Msg:It's cool to be a ST fan in Germany.

Sun Apr 18 15:16:33 2004: master_q [0/] Msg:Roger, approximately how long did it take to make Trekkies 2?

Sun Apr 18 15:16:34 2004: trekkies2 [0/] Msg:Anywhere you find computers, you find ST fans. And Germany has a lot of computers.

Sun Apr 18 15:17:02 2004: master_q [0/] Msg:How did you get involved in original Trekkies and become the director? (And that of course, led to the second Trekkies...)

Sun Apr 18 15:17:23 2004: trekkies2 [0/] Msg:1 month of preparation, 3 months of shooting on the road, and 8 months in the editing room finding the links, the transitions, the stories...

Sun Apr 18 15:17:54 2004: trekkies2 [0/] Msg:(that doesn't include the 14 months it took to work out a deal with Parmount to go forward.

Sun Apr 18 15:18:07 2004: trekkies2 [0/] Msg:T1 was Denise Crosby's idea...

Sun Apr 18 15:23:24 2004: trekkies2 [0/] Msg:It's the usual route for indie films to screen at festivals (if they will accept your film). Although the second time around we are a "Studio" film, we will still be doing some festival screenings because...

Sun Apr 18 15:24:11 2004: trekkies2 [0/] Msg:the film still has the independent spirit. We had final cut and were allowed to make the documentary we wanted without any interference.

Sun Apr 18 15:24:39 2004: trekkies2 [0/] Msg:You will see some things that probably wouldn't be in there if it was a studio controlled piece.

Sun Apr 18 15:25:07 2004: trekkies2 [0/] Msg:For example, we asked people to make predictions for the show, and not everybody was positive in it's future.

Sun Apr 18 15:25:32 2004: trekkies2 [0/] Msg:Although, even so, they were usually still hopeful.

Sun Apr 18 15:26:16 2004: trekkies2 [0/] Msg:The overiding consensus around the world was to give the show a rest for a few years, so they can come back to it with some fresh ideas.

Sun Apr 18 15:26:40 2004: trekkies2 [0/] Msg:Don't hold back!

Sun Apr 18 15:26:44 2004: mrskirk [0/] Msg:You mentioned watching TOS as a kid. Were you still a Trek fan as an adult, or did meeting the fans during filming "convert" you?

Sun Apr 18 15:26:51 2004: master_q [0/] Msg:Yeah, I agree with that. It does need a rest.

Sun Apr 18 15:27:28 2004: trekkies2 [0/] Msg:I had sort of moved on to other shows, but had been to a Fangoria convention, and that reknidled my interest.
