James Tiberius Kirk from the original Star Trek television series, will receive an ACTRA award of excellence in his hometown of Montreal this week. "We are thrilled to recognize William Shatner's illustrious career and 50-year contribution to the film and television industry," said Matt Holland, president of ACTRA's Montreal branch. "The ACTRA Award is in appreciation of his work as an accomplished actor, writer, director and producer." ACTRA's national president, Thor Bishopric, will present Shatner with his award during the organization's 60th anniversary gala celebration at the Windsor Ballroom on Nov. 22. After studying commerce at McGill University, Shatner began a career as a radio actor before moving to theatre, where he was an early performer at Ontario's Stratford Festival. He later moved to television work in New York. Over the years, Shatner has had more than 100 film and TV roles. ACTRA is the trade union representing Canadian performers and the ACTRA awards celebrate accomplishments in Canadian film, radio and television. They were presented from 1972 until 1986, but the organization reinstated the awards, including the award of excellence, for its 60th anniversary.
