Three new comics by IDW Publishing will be released in January, and one of the comics will be a prequel to the Star Trek into Darkness movie.

The three comics are Star Trek The Next Generation/Doctor Who Volume 2, Star Trek #17 and Star Trek: Countdown to Darkness #1.

In Star Trek The Next Generation/Doctor Who Volume 2, “When the Federation’s most terrifying enemy strikes an unholy alliance with one of the Doctor’s most hated antagonists, the result is devastation on a cosmic scale! Spanning the ends of space and time itself, Captain Jean-Luc Picard and the crew of the USS Enterprise find themselves joining forces with the Doctor and his companions, with the fate of the galaxy hanging in the balance!”

Written by Scott and David Tipton, with art and cover by J.K. Woodward, the one-hundred-and-four page issue will sell for $17.99.

Star Trek #17 is the story of the “never-been-seen origins of the Enterprise crew in the new movie timeline! First up is Doctor Leonard ‘Bones’ McCoy: find out how the cantankerous miracle worker found himself on a shuttle to Starfleet Academy with James T. Kirk! With a story overseen by Star Trek writer/producer Roberto Orci, this all-new tale sets the stage for the upcoming film!”

Thirty-two pages in length, Star Trek #17 was written by Mike Johnson, with art by Claudia Balboni, and art by Tim Bradstreet. Star Trek #17 will sell for $3.99.

Finally, the prequel comic to Star Trek into Darkness will make its debut with Star Trek: Countdown to Darkness #1, the first of a four-issue prequel mini-series which will “set the stage” for the May 2013 film.

Written by Roberto Orci and Mike Johnson, with art by David Messina, the thirty-two page issue will sell for $3.99.
