Vic 17 Posted January 20, 2012 February is Black History Month, and Deep Space Nine‘s Avery Brooks will be appearing in Savannah, Georgia at a Black Heritage Festival in a play celebrating the life of a nineteenth century African-American Shakespearean actor. Brooks will be appearing in Ira Aldridge: The African Roscius, at 7 PM on February 18 at the Armstrong Atlantic State University Fine Arts Center. The play is open to the public and free of charge. In Ira Aldridge: The African Roscius, the life and times of Ira Aldridge is explored. Born in 1805, Aldridge was forced to emigrate to Europe in the early 1800s so that he could perform and escape the discrimination he faced in the U.S. Aldridge performed on the stage for over forty years, and received multiple awards, honors and official decorations. He died in 1867, leaving behind his second wife and four children. Three of his children became opera singers. Brooks is no stranger to the stage or to Shakespeare, having performed in Othello and King Lear. His other stage performances include: Paul Robeson. Fences, The Oedipus Plays and Tamburlaine.
