He was tired of people telling him how young he looked.

 

Bonus: Frakes disliked shaving, so he grew a beard. When he returned to rehearsal for season two, the producers liked it. Also, fan reactions at convention appearances influenced Gene Roddenberry to ask Frakes to keep the beard.
