TransporterMalfunction 1 Posted October 7, 2003 I am currently trying to run Scandisk on my desktop (Which runs Windows 98) before running the Defrag, however I keep getting a message saying that Scandisk has run 10 times and is unable to finish due to background programs active. I have shut down all the programs I am aware of but am still getting the same message. Does anyone know of a way that I can find out which background programs are still active? Many Thanks

Many Thanks Go to "Start" then click "Run" then type in "msconfig". This will bring up a configuration program that gives you many options. I can't really remember if Win 98's is the same as Win XP's so you'll have to just play around with it and explore. Go to the "Start Up" section and you will be able to see all of the programs that start up when the computer starts. My other suggestion would be to shut down the computer, reboot holding F8 down. It will give you the option of starting Windows a couple of different ways. Start it in safemode then run Scandisk (I believe ScanDisk will run in safemode). Or you can hit Alt-Ctrl-Delete and it will bring up a list of everyting running. Highlight each individual program and click "End Task" Be sure to only hit Delete one time while you are holding Alt-Ctrl down though, otherwise the computer will reboot. Hope this helps.
