APW 0 Posted September 9, 2003 "You can help end injustice around the world" It was with these words that a high school teacher of mine first told me (and the others in my class) about Amnesty International.I have been a member for several years now and would like to share some information with you. Right now thousands of people are being subjected to unspeakable forms of torture worldwide.And untold thousands are unjustly imprisoned for holding non-conforming political views or religious beliefs...or simply for their race,gender,ethnicity,or sexual orientation.Countless others have been forcibly "disappeared" without a trace for daring to speak out against their government. "I did not experience a human face or see a green leaf,and my only company were cockroaches and mice. The only daylight that entered my cell was through a small opening at the top of one wall.For eight months I had my hands and feet tied. On Christmas the door to my cell opened and the guard tossed in a crumpled piece of paper.I moved as best I could to pick it up. It said simply,'do not be discouraged;we know you are alive.'It had the Amnesty international candle on it. These words saved my life and my sanity.Eight months later I was set free."
