Truckload of human feces spills on Indiana roadway

Recommended Posts

CROWN POINT, Indiana - Indiana 55 has reopened after a truckload of human feces spilled onto the roadway in northwestern Indiana's Crown Point.

The driver told police he was hauling treated human feces from a water recycling plant in Portage when the load spilled about 10:30 a.m. Thursday.

The Lake County hazardous materials response team came to clean up the mess, along with the Crown Point Fire Department and Indiana State Police.

The northbound and southbound lanes of the highway were closed during the cleanup.

The Indiana Department of Transportation cited the driver for an unsecured load.

That's a crappy situation to be in. If I were told to clean it up, I'd definitely have raised a stink.

Well, today is just a day for spills.

Laguna sewage spill closes portion of PCH

20,000 gallons have forced massive detours.

LAGUNA BEACH - A river of soapy, stinky sewer water closed South Coast Highway this afternoon, frustrating rush hour commuters with lengthy delays and detours through the town's narrow side streets.

The closure of South Coast Highway from Bluebird Canyon Road to Nye's Place is anticipated to last into the evening, said Sgt. Jason Kravetz of the Laguna Beach Police Department.

William Holoman, senior water quality analyst with the City of Laguna Beach said approximately 20,000 gallons of raw sewage at Diamond Street and South Coast Highway was first spotted around 3:30 p.m. and appeared to have been caused by a failure in a valve along the North Coast Interceptor, the main sewer line that runs through Laguna Beach.

Beaches in the town from Cress Street to Rockledge Road will be closed for at least 24 hours, Holoman said.

City crews are installing a temporary pump to divert the flow to another sewer line to bypass the problem. Holoman estimated that project could take anywhere from two hours to midnight.

The Laguna Beach Police Department has officers directing traffic through the detour, which diverts drivers to Glenneyre Street.

"We have opened up our emergency operations center and are calling in extra staff to deal with it from all departments," Kravetz said.

Thanks to this spill, my wife got stuck in traffic... on a bus, no less. Which means she won't be home for another hour or so.
