Bradbury

"You were a hero to Gene Roddenberry," Nichelle Nichols (Uhura) told groundbreaking science fiction author Ray Bradbury at a Planetary Society celebration of the writer's birthday on Saturday.

Numerous Star Trek actors, writers and producers have been involved in the celebration of Bradbury's birthday, which coincides with the closest approach of Mars to Earth in thousands of years, reported StarTrek.com.

Bradbury, who wrote The Martian Chronicles, was honored in the Next Generation episode "Menage a Troi" by having the U.S.S. Bradbury named for him. He turns 83 as Mars approaches the convergence on August 27th, dubbed "Mars Day" by the Planetary Society.

Among the Trek staff attending the party were Enterprise story editor Andre Bormanis, technical advisors Michael and Denise Okuda and authors Garfield and Judith Reeves-Stevens.

Nichols pinned a Starfleet badge on Bradbury's lapel to make him an honorary crew member on the Enterprise.

An audio report about the festivities including comments by Bormanis is available at the Planetary Society site. StarTrek.com's report is here. Previous TrekToday coverage of the event may be found here and here.
