Blaze at Monte Carlo on the Las Vegas Strip

Recommended Posts

LAS VEGAS - All guests were evacuated from the 32-story Monte Carlo Resort and Casino after a three-alarm fire broke out on the roof Friday, closing part of the Las Vegas Strip and snarling traffic as tourists flocked in for the weekend.

Ambulances were sent to the scene, but no major injuries were reported.

The fire, which was reported just before 11 a.m. (2 p.m. ET), sent flames and plumes of black smoke spreading across the roof line from the center section of the 90,000-square-foot resort for more than an hour before firefighters were able to get the upper hand.

The Clark County Fire Department said the blaze attacked the exteriors of the south and west wings of the building. It said the fire in the west wing was contained shortly after noon, while the fire in the south wing was nearing containment.

Jennifer Knight, a spokeswoman for Clark County, told MSNBC that the cause of the fire had not been confirmed, but she said a team of welders had been working on the roof.

Officer Bill Cassell, a Las Vegas police spokesman, told MSNBC that city and county firefighters were slowed by the need to hand-carry fire hoses up the stairs from ground level because the fire was out of reach of ladders. Some firefighters could be seen on the roof.

The hotel is home to more than 3,000 guest rooms and 211 luxury suites, including penthouse units on the flaming top floors, NBC affiliate KVBC reported. Guests were evacuated to the nearby Bellagio and New York, New York hotel-casinos, which are also owned by the Monte Carlo’s owner, MGM Mirage.
