But it is anything but quiet, even though the hour is late. Many people have taken to the streets to marvel at a bright star that seems to be hovering over this village. The town is crowded with travelers who have come in response to the king’s order that all must return to their birthplace, to take part in the census and be taxed. Many travelers could not find lodging; indeed, some slept in doorways and sought other shelter against the cold night. One inn operator said he had to turn away many from his door, and rented bed space on the floor of his dining room. “I could have filled many more rooms,” Amos said. “I even put up one couple in the stable. The man had begged me to let them stay there because his wife was with child.” Some observers say the bright star seems to be directly over this inn. Several shepherds came down from the hills above the village during the night, asking about the star. “I thought they were crazy at first, but they were insistent that a king had been born here during the night, and said they had heard about it from an angel,” Amos told reporters. “The last time I saw them, they were headed toward the stable. I’ve been too busy fixing breakfast for all these customers to go see what is going on back there.” One of the shepherds, who declined to be named, said “We were watching our sheep, and all of a sudden, this angel was above us in a bright light. We were really scared, but the angel told us to not be afraid, and to come to Bethlehem to see this baby who had been born in a manger.” A second shepherd, Aaron, said they found a man named Joseph of Nazareth, and his young wife, Mary, and a new-born child called Jesus. “It was an awesome experience. We’ve told everyone we have seen about it. I’ll never forget it.” Roman troops were put on alert, as word of the child’s birth has spread rapidly. King Herod has sent investigators from Jerusalem to find out about what a royal spokesman considered a threat to homeland security. Checkpoints were reinforced at the nation’s borders as a precaution, he said. Indeed, when three kings from the Orient crossed the border during the night, they told sentries they, too, were following the star. Troops diverted them to the capital city and an audience with Herod, who, observers say, has an intense interest in reports of a king being born. "There is only one king," the royal spokesman told reporers, "and such rumors could lead to unrest, which could be dangerous, with so many people crowding the roads and towns. We will have zero tolerence for any disrutpion during this important time." Interesting perspective!
A l t e r E g o 9 Posted December 24, 2007 I don't think allot of the language used in it applies to today; Roman troops and King Herod don't exist except metaphorically. Switching the scenario to realistically portray real life today would have the "UFO" destroyed, any witnesses warned to keep their mouths shut or die and a complete cover-up story fed to the press.
