Honolulu Hit With Lawsuit Over Ball Game

HONOLULU (AP) - A 911 dispatcher who claims a ball injured her eye during an office game has hit back with a lawsuit against the city and her co-worker.

Sally Crowder claims her suit stems from a game in which employees threw a small ball at each other's backs while they were working. Some "players" would try to throw the ball hard enough to cause the target "to verbally express pain," according to the lawsuit filed this week in state court.

Crowder claimed she had been struck by the ball, smaller than a tennis ball, several times. On May 28, the suit says, a ball allegedly thrown by fellow 911 operator Flossie Leong hit her left eye and sent her to the doctor with a detached retina.

Honolulu police spokeswoman Michelle Yu, responding for the city and Leong, declined comment.

The suit says that another co-worker had tried to stop the game, but that a supervisor refused to step in, calling the game therapeutic.

The supervisor, who is not identified in the lawsuit, later ordered the game discontinued after Crowder filed a worker's compensation claim, which was denied by the city, the lawsuit said.

The suit seeks unspecified damages for "serious and permanent injuries" and mental and emotional distress.

Throwing a ball with enough force to case pain is considered "therapeutic"???... :P

This supervisor needs his head examined!

As outrageous as this case sounds, if the employer's lawyer could pick the right judge, this case could be ... tossed right out of court.
