Philippine Driver Returns Lost Money

MANILA, Philippines (AP) - He needed the money for his sick wife and overdue rent, but honesty prevented a motorcycle taxi driver from keeping $17,000 left behind by a passenger.

 

Iluminado Boc returned the money to police in Tagbilaran city on central Bohol island last week, the Philippine Daily Inquirer reported Monday. The woman who lost the bag of cash had just reported it to police when Boc showed up at the precinct.

 

"It was not mine," Boc was quoted as saying.

 

Boc, 45, said he was struggling financially because his wife was taken to a hospital the same day he found the money, and they had unpaid rent.

 

The owner rewarded him with $32 - about seven times what a motorcycle taxi driver makes a day.

 

 

 

A lousy $32 reward for returning $17,000???!!!!! What a cheapskate! She should at least have given him a few hundred dollars!

A $32 reward does seem cheap. Maybe the woman needed all $17,000 for some specific reason.

 

Why have a bag of $17,000 in cash, though. Does this sound odd to anyone else?

While $32 may seem cheap to us remember it is seven times more what the driver makes in a day. From what I understand from friends that come from the Philippines it is not safe to have that much money on a person. Do we know that she did not offer more which was turned down and $32 what was agreed apon?

I don't think that there are too many places ANYWHERE where you can be safe carrying a bag with $17,000 cash in it!
