Abrams Collaborator Burk Talks 'Trek XI'

'Lost' executive producer shrugs off Academy rumours, says he couldn't be more excited to be involved with Star Trek,

Bryan Burk, who is J.J. Abrams' fellow executive producer on Lost, said that he would be part of the group working on the eleventh Star Trek film and downplayed rumours that it would focus on Kirk and Spock at Starfleet Academy.

 

"I can tell you that that article [with the rumour] leaked out prematurely, so there's no formal statement made from any of us, other than we all couldn't be more excited about it," Burk told Sci Fi Wire. "We actually have this thing where we're just not talking about it outside of...us right now."

 

"Us" includes lost co-creator Damon Lindelof and writers Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci, the co-writers of Abrams' recent directorial project M:I-3. The third Mission: Impossible film opened to disappointing numbers at the box office which continued to fall last weekend as The Da Vinci Code and William Shatner (Kirk)'s Over the Hedge both had a solid opening weekend. Next weekend the arrival of X-Men: The Last Stand, starring Patrick Stewart (Picard), is expected to erode further M:I-3's audiences.

 

As for Star Trek XI, Burk said, "We're all very excited...to say I'm excited is the understatement of the [year]." Though frequent Abrams collaborator Greg Grunberg has said in interviews that he expected to be in the film and thought it would focus on a young Kirk and Spock, Burk joked, "There's no way Greg Grunberg knows what the Federation is." But he did expect the actor to appear in the film.
