LordOfTheBorg 1 Posted September 22, 2005 Watch out when your at starbucks next.. with your laptop. Anyone can see what your doing, check out your passwords etc. If you don't want this to happen, there are a few ways you can make sure they never see anything.. 1) turn on your windows firewall. 2)ONLY WORKS IN XP PRO- 1. Double-click My Computer on the desktop. 2. On the Tools menu, click Folder Options. 3. Click the View tab, and then select the Use Simple File Sharing (Recommended) check box to turn on Simple File Sharing. (Clear this check box to turn off this feature.) 3)For XP home- Run>cmd.exe then enter net user guest (some password here) and enter the password there, it will make it so the people who want to see stuff can't get on to your computer VIA the guest account, as thats how they see... Madame Butterfly 0 Posted September 23, 2005 Erm..........Wally, I think this is a tad paranoid. I have used laptops at Panera bread, you just find a bit more secluded spot. If you sit with your back to the wall, you're in control.
LordOfTheBorg 1 Posted September 23, 2005 No, your not. Doesn't matter where you are in anyplace that has open-wi-fi, the hackers aren't going to ignore you becuase you have you back against the wall.. but, its up to you to get hacked.
Madame Butterfly 0 Posted September 23, 2005 (edited) You don't really mention why these measures were needed. Sorry Wally, lately I've needed things very well laid out for me. :P It's even more dangerous at internet cafes where the comp is provided for you.
