Punctuation Day 2005

Recommended Posts

National Punctuation Day

Ushering in the new school year is National Punctuation Day® on August 22, a holiday listed in Chase’s Calendar of Events as a celebration of the lowly comma, correctly used quotes, and other proper uses of periods, semicolons and the ever mysterious ellipsis.

Jeff Rubin, owner/publisher of Put It In Writing, a newsletter publishing company based in Pinole, CA, (

www.put-it-in-writing.com) founded National Punctuation Day® to draw attention to the importance of proper punctuation. It’s a day for librarians, educators, and parents — people who are interested in teaching and promoting good writing skills to their students and their children. It’s also a day to remind business people that they are often judged by how they present themselves.

“Successful people have good communication skills, and that includes knowing how to write properly,” Jeff says. “Punctuation counts. A misplaced comma can alter the meaning of a message.”

It’s not just school children who need to learn the do’s and don’ts of punctuation.

“I’m stunned at how many executives and CEOs send me articles and correspondence that are poorly written and punctuated,” Jeff says. “Did they miss a year of school? I read ad copy and see billboards that scream to be corrected. Poor punctuation knows no sociological boundaries — everyone from high school dropouts to Ph.D.s needs help with punctuation.”

:D Oops, busted on that one. Funniest thing is, I do not use the ellipses out of their normal contexts save for when I am at the message boards.

Could not resist, LOL. -----> :dots: *snicker*

Oh thank God! The grammar and spelling produced on this site from some members is abysmal. I was actually thinking of starting a topic on the subject when I saw the above post. Hopefully some people can learn a little punctuation and grammar on this day and make their future posts a little more comprehensible.

What a fantastic idea! I bookmarked it, because I'm pretty sure that the "puntuation police" have been waiting to bust me. :D Is there a "Grammar Day" too?

I agree punctuatiom is important! But I have to ask - If there is a Grammar Day, does that mean there is a Grampar Day? (couldn't resist that :P ) And will the national media cover Punctuation Day, or will they be "commatose" on the subject?
