Answer: They were heading to the Arachnid Nebula to explore.

 

Bonus Answer: They are referred to as V'tosh ka'tur" by the Vulcan elders. (Vulcans without logic) They are on a pilgrimage to explore and incorporate their emotions. They are trying to find a balance between emotion and logic.
