A pretty good episode.

This episode finally allowed some depth to be given to Deanna Troi, who actually served a useful purpose in this episode, and it was about time she felt some stress and a sense of duty after nearly five years of sitting in her chair with her silly jumpsuits telling the Captain that the Alien on the viewscreen threatening to kill them all was feeling "a lot of hostility".

This episode was about people being placed in unfamilar circumstances. Troi had to take command of a Galaxy Class starship, Picard had to deal with his biggest fear....yes....KIDS!!!!! which he did well. His character needed something like that.

Three other stories played out in this episode (I love fractured narratives).

Geordi and Beverley were trapped in a cargo bay that was ready to explode at any time as a plasma fire spiralled out of control, threatening to detonate barrels of explosive material. There was a pretty cool scene where they depressurise the cargo bay door and are almost blown out into space by the escaping air.

Riker and Data were trapped in Engineering, with a cool scene where Riker has to use Data's head to gain control of the warp systems.

And the famous plotline where Worf hilariously delivers Molly O'Brien, with a priceless line: "You may now give birth". Rosalind Chao and Michael Dorn were both superb.

Excellent episode.

I also have to give it a 5. So much going on, yet it didn't feel compounded or too complicated. Cool work overall from everyone.

Though I wouldn't think kids in the 24th Century would actually know "Frere Jacques". Just a hunch.
