I gave it a 4. The only real downside for this episode is that it didn't really evoke any emotion out of me. Good acting and decent writing. Nice bit with McCoy and Spock at the end. The development between those two was really the high point. The Tholians were actually a believable species, as they were not the kind who immediately distrust outsiders. They actually gave Spock a chance before taking action. A strong 4, but needed just a little more out of it.

Another great episode. However, I really thought that McCoy was being a royal pain in the butt to Spock thoroughout the episode. Didn't spock have enough to worry about? The Tholians, of course, also appeared in TAS as well as Enterprise. This episode is also the basis for "In a Mirror, Darkly" episode of Enterprise.

This is the very first ep of star trek i recall seeing as a child. I was hooked ever since. Way cool Tholians make this one worth repeat viewings and the final scene where McCoy and Spock feigned ignorance regarding Kirk's last orders, was priceless. A great ep, one of my top five faves.
