I would like to see some non-Island shows. Some of my favorite installments of Survivor were non-Island. I liked S2 which was in Australia and S3 in Africa. S5 in Thailand was pretty good too and S6 was on the Amazon.

Probst: 'Palau' is a different 'Survivor'

According to Jeff Probst ‘Survivor Palau’ is the response to critics who believe the CBS reality series has become too predictable.

 

“There are more firsts this season than we have ever had,” Probst told Jam! Showbiz. “That’s what struck me as the season went on and on. Some of them are twists. Some of them are things that happened organically and some are a result of challenges but there are more things you have never seen before this season.”

 

Calling ‘Palau’ the “water season”, Probst promised the challenges on this the tenth installment are the most physical and original ever.

 

“The visibility underwater was so good we decide to pull out a lot of challenges we have been sitting on. In the first three or four episodes we have some of the most physical challenges I think we have ever put on in terms of endurance and needing to be physically fit,” said Probst.

 

To the delight of the producers, strengthening the challenges made things difficult for the tribes to immediately target the athletic players as they had in the past. A problem which had haunted the series as a whole and ultimately doomed ‘Survivor: Vanuatu’.

 

“The message that they (the players) are going to find out is if you vote out your strong simply because they are strong…go ahead…but odds are, you will back at Tribal Council,” said Probst revealing that there is a major “cat fight” at one of the challenges early on.

 

 

The producers also kept the players off balance right out of the gate by not providing the them with any information or tools whatsoever to begin the game. The ‘Palau’ players didn’t even know if they were one tribe or not.

 

“This time, I literally show up and say…There’s your beach. Have a good time,” Probst stated. “The players began wondering…Do I start making alliances now or will that maybe bite me in the *buttocks*? Should I not say anything at this moment? Do we build a shelter? Are we staying here? There is no name on the flag. It just says ‘Survivor Palau’.”

 

Probst said that confusing start doesn’t sound like a whole lot but it “pays off” in the first few days and Day 33 because the producers put into the players’ heads that ‘Palau’ is a slightly different game.

 

Viewers will see that difference for themselves when the first two ‘Survivor Palau’ contestants get booted. They don’t get kicked the traditional way at Tribal Council. They are victims of a tribal pick ‘em. Two players aren’t selected to be on a tribe and therefore must leave the game immediately.

 

“It is brutal. It is the same feeling you have when you’re not picked on a schoolyard or when you’re the first guy laid off. At its core, without question, ‘Survivor’ is a social game and that is put to the test right away. These people in essence never really get a chance to play this game and yet they go through all the work to get there,” said Probst.

 

Besides the water-based premise, ‘Palau’ also will underscore the theme of “choices” and their “consequences”.

 

“You may not even pick up on it but it started filtering in and we started making it an element to some challenges, some situations and some decisions. The thinking was…Let’s every time we can let them make a choice and it ends up having an impact,” said Probst.

 

While the producers did use the Second World War heritage of the ‘Palau’ area as a backdrop, Probst maintains they didn’t exploit it. The Tribal Council area is in a bunker-like set and there may be some military themes to the challenges but the producers viewed ‘Palau’ as a living monument to the conflict.

As for Wonda, if I had been there and someone on my tribe picked her to join us I've have voted that person just for that reason.

 

I knew the minute she started singing that she would never make it to a tribe. I was a bit surprised that the other guy wasn't picked, I'd have thought his physical fitness would have been a positive factor for the others when picking.

 

I also wasn't surprised to Jolanda voted out, she should have played it more low key rather then trying to take control right from the start.

 

I can already see that they are going to play up the "Gomer" personality with James. His accent is just too thick and he's too skinny for them not to.

 

I was a little surprised, and annoyed by how the survivors started "playing" the game before they even knew if they were a tribe or not. It just seemed too early to begin talking about "who are you voting for" when they didn't even know if there was going to be a vote or when it would be. I attribute that to Coby and I see that possibly making him a target at some point.

 

I like the way they mixed the show up right from the start, I think the twist was needed to keep the players off balance. Iamb really hoping to see some big twists that will continue that sense of insecurity in their minds.

 

At this point I don't have anyone that I think will win. I don't believe it will be any of the "above the radar" players or any of the obviously "physically fit" players.

 

If I had to pick a final 4 I think just based on tonight's episode I'd like to see:

 

James, just because I know his accent will annoy everyone that's not used to hearing it ... and it is a lot thicker then what Iamb used to but it reminds me of some of my family that live in the deep south (in southern Alabama).

 

Janu, I don't really have a reason. It's more of a feeling. There's something about her personality (the little that we know so far) that makes me think she could go at least till the merge.

 

Willard, because of his age I think he will "fly under the Radar" much the way Pascale did in S4. He looks like he can contribute and is well fit. But his age may play a part in a vote.

 

And finally

 

Tom, he's a fire fighter. Looks to be fit yet also looks to have a little age on him. I count those to both be positives.

 

I think the "elders" help keep a tribe focused and the "pphysicallyfit" members sustain their tribes in the challenges. I really expect the winner to come from Koror, They have "elders" and "wwarriors

 

Those are 100% guesses of course so don't hold me to them.

 

For tonight's eepisodeI was correct on Wanda not getting voted into a tribe but was wrong about Coby getting voted onto one.

 

I was correct in Jolanda getting voted out but I was wrong about Coby picking AAshleewhen his pick came around. (Does anyone else thing that will come back to bite him?)

 

All in all I amb very pleased with the way the season has started.

 

I know we don't have a lot of survivor fans here but I"d very much like reading your feedback.

Wasn't the guy who wasn't picked the one who jumped out and started swimming? I might be wrong, but it is hard to follow when there are 20 people (well 17 now). It's also hard because once all the guys talk their shirts off and you don't already know who they are, they all look the same. I'm not gay (not that there's anything wrong with that), I'm just saying aside from Willard and Ibrehem, I have a hard time distinguishing who's who until they begin to drop in number.

Well tonight's Survivor night, I don't have a feel for the cast members yet so I don't have any guesses on who might get the boot or who might be safe.

 

I have a feeling that this season will have a lot of twists and turns in it, the Survivor "Powers that be" need to stir things up and keep the cast off balance so I think this season will be unlike the other 9 seasons in many ways.

They are pretty much ignoring Ibrehem. I think the only words he spoke tonight on camera were at the end when he voted.

 

That makes me think they're ignoring him for a reason, making him "invisible". I'm not sure what it may mean but a lot of times they will ignore a contestant to make them seem less social, then all of the sudden they will focus on that person for an episode or 2 and that leads to his or her boot.

 

Just a thought. Maybe it's just that he hasn't done anything interesting yet.

I really loved the reward challenge tonight. I thought it was the best challenge they've had yet in any season. I also think those survivors had to be hurting when they got back to camp.

I could not believe that one girl had that hard a time swinging on that rope to get to the platform. I was impressed with Angie, she rocked that challange!

It seems that Wanda let some information slip out in an interview that she did with TV Guide.

TVG: Did your singing do you in?

 

Wanda: [Whispering] No. I know that they tried to portray that, but that is because they didn't want it to come out that they stocked the show with young models. They did. Out of the 20 people that were originally cast, they cut seven and put pretty people from modeling agencies in instead, so that they would have the eye candy. We found that out while we were there [in Palau]. When we asked [each other], "What did you do for your audition tape?" some of the people would say, "Oh, well, I didn't really do an audition tape."

 

It seems that the models that they hired aren't doing too well. I think it's because they don't really care about being on Survivor, this is just another "gig" for them and their career.

 

That's why the "older" people seem to be winning at this point.

 

Also, think back to the reunion show last season. In it Jeff told about how people could apply for Season 11, at that point Season 10 had already been completed. He said "Don't apply if you're going to quit". I'm thinking that at least a few of these "hired hands" are going to decide that it's not worth it out there and just quit.

 

Ashlee did it, they didn't show it on TV but she quit. She went and told everyone to vote for her. If you think back to the episode it was coming down to a 4-4 tie between Kim and Ashlee.

 

So, thinking that it could be a 4-4 tie what did Ashlee do? She voted for Jeff ensuring that it would be at least 4 votes for her, 3 votes for Kim and 1 vote for Jeff. No tie, she goes home. Plus if you listen to the other people when they voted you'll see that they all said that they didn't want to vote her out but they respected her wishes and did it because she asked them to.

Jeff somehow gets injured, so I believe that will cause him to either quit or be voted out. I could envision it coming down to Ulong losing the IC and Jeff telling everyone that he's hurting the team with his injury and therefore it would be best for them to vote him out. But it could also be that his injury is so bad that he decides that he just can't go on and has to bow out.

 

Either way I believe he will be the one leaving tonight. With that he would be the third member of Ulong to go so you have to wonder how many people they can lose and still have any hopes of having the winner come from their tribe.

 

Should be an interesting episode.

I had a feeling that Koror would win when Ulong couldn't even decide on picking a "leader" for the challenge. They just lucked out that they picked James to pick their tools. I just wish they (the show) had explained why they picked the winner and why the loser lost. I have a feeling that Ulong lost for 2 reasons.

 

First, their structure didn't seem to be very sturdy and second they put the shower right next to the toilet as opposed to making it a separate structure. The reason I think that was a mistake is 2 fold.

 

1. If there's a person using the shower at the same time as a person who is using the toilet there isn't a whole lot of privacy for either person. Not that privacy is probably a big issue with them anymore but that was my first thought.

 

2. Since there's no running water and the toilet doesn't flush they had to dig a pit. If/when that pit is full and a new one needs to be dug the toilet is going to need to be moved to the new pit. That might only be 5 or 10 feet away but it's more practical to move the toilet alone rather then having to move the toilet, wash up area and shower all together as one unit.

 

Koror's was just the opposite of Ulongs. They may not have looked as "fancy" but they were better constructed and were separate units giving the users more privacy and Tom even pointed out that the toilet structure was dug in and could be dug up and moved if need be.

 

The Immunity challenge probably could have gone either way but Coby just had a weight advantage over James and Kim was pretty much worthless. Angie and Stacy impressed me and I see them as being strong for their tribe, I would see them lasting longer then some of the guys (like James or Ibriheem).

 

Ulong's problem is that they started off the season not wanting to follow a "Leader" so they got rid of Jolanda. By doing that they basically cut their own head off and now their body is dying. For them to hang in there as a tribe they need to either elect Bobby Jon or Stacy as their leader and then pray for some kind of tribal mix up that brings some of Koror onto their tribe. Otherwise, at 9 - 5 they're in big trouble.

Tonight's episode was the best episode I've seen since Season 7 ended.

I loved the twist of the double TC though I thought it was a little harsh for Koror to sit there and fawn all over the food while there were 5 other hungry people in front of them. I was with Coby on that one and thought they should have played a bit more low key. I'd like to think that I'd refuse the food as a way of showing support for the people that were being forced to sit there and watch. But it's a whole lot easier to say I wouldn't eat the food while I'm sitting in my warm house after eating a nice meal then it would be to actually do after being out there for 12 days starving and cold.

 

Anyway, it was a cool twist and I knew 100% for sure that the first time Koror went to TC that Willard would be gone. In fact I may have mentioned it somewhere above in the past. I know I told my brother that I'd vote Willard out at the first chance.

 

As interesting as all of that was I thought the most interesting part came when Koror had to vote to give someone immunity on Ulong. I felt sure that Ibrehem would get the vote, I also felt sure that if he didn't that he'd get that vote and be gone.

 

I think it was smart for Koror to give Ibrehem immunity because I think he's the weakest link on Ulong, so give him immunity and you insure that their weakest link remains on their tribe to continue hurting them.

 

Once he had immunity I thought James would get voted out, Angie and Steph had done well in all challenges and Bobby Jon seems to be the leader and is strong. That left James as the next weakest link on that tribe. I like his personality on the show, but I think it was a mistake to vote Angie out and not James.

 

Anything can happen of course but at this point I think it's fair to say that the winner looks to be someone from Koror and I see trouble looming over there. Tom and Ian are ripe for a back stabbing and Gregg is the one holding the knife.

That was done on purpose to cause tension on Ulong and possibly set up some good fights once the merge takes place.

James was voted out when he was. I think Bobby Jon trusted the wrong person and was lied to by her. This week didn't surprise me either, Ibrehem really should have left a couple weeks ago.

 

It is a little surprising to see them down to a tribe of 2 now though. Last week Jeff said that a tribe of 3 was a first but that was incorrect, Season 4 had a tribe of 3 at one point. Now that Ulong is a tribe of 2 though that's a first. It's also a first to see one tribe win every single immunity going into the merge (which I expect next week).

 

It's been a good season, but I think if they want to continue being a successful series they need to come up with some ways to change the dynamic of the game. I really enjoy watching it and I've watched every season several times over but at some point it gets to be a bit much with the same things over and over each week.

They will have a "merge" which basically only means that 2 people will move their camp, then a day or 2 later 1 of those 2 people will be out of the game and if the 8 remaining people of Koror are smart then the second of the 2 will leave 3 days after that.

Well tonight's episode was interesting. We're really seeing some firsts for this series in this season.

I had expected to see a merge and then Bobby Jon get voted out. As it is now, other then the winners of each season and with the lone exception of Mike Skupin from Season 2 (and not counting the few quiters from the past) Bobby Jon is the only person to leave the game without being voted out.

 

Now that Ulong is no more the real game begins and after hearing a few things from Tom I'm not so sure that Stephanie will leave next week. I can really envision her making it to the Final 4 if Tom, Ian and Katie's plan works out.

Given her weakness for starting fire I would have bet the farm she'd lose, glad I didn't.

 

VBG could you post a clip of that challenge please, it looked like Bobby Jon had a chance but blew it by fiddling around with the fire instead of just throwing fuel on it; I'd like to see that again.

 

Can't wait to see how she fared alone, I wonder if they'll keep her as a tribe of one; losing an immunity challenge could then be a sudden death ending but merging her now could interesting too.
