Wishfire 2 Posted October 7, 2004 In the DS9 episode "Tribble Trouble," Sisko and co, ended up in the TOS episode "The Trouble with Tribbles." Worf informed his crewmates that the aggresive human-looking people running aroun Station K-7 (I think that was it's designation, I'm not postive) were, in fact Klingons, but refused to say anything else about it. Any clues as to how these Klingons turned into the later Klingons?
Takara_Soong 4 Posted October 7, 2004 There are a lot of arguments and debates about the differences in the TOS era Klingons and the Klingons seen later so it depends on what type of answer you're looking for. Improvements in make-up techniques and budget are the reason for the differences. As for explaining the differences as it pertains to canon, I believe it has been said that there are different races of Klingons just as they have said there are different races of Trill to explain the make-up difference between the TNG episode that introduced the Trill and the Trill of DS9. Wishfire 2 Posted October 8, 2004 (edited) I can understand the better make-up for the show, but I meant IN the show. And if they're another race of Klingons, then what's their story? Were they conquered? I mean, there are different races of humans, but they're all basically the same. As for the Trill, the biggest difference is spot pattern. But with TOS Klingons and later Klingons, there's a drastic difference. Perhaps, the Klingons experimented with genetic manipulation, which resulted in TOS Klingons, decided they sucked, and sent them to where they would most likely die quicker, therefore getting rid of their problem AND using them to an advantage. Takara_Soong 4 Posted October 8, 2004 With the TNG Trill and the later Trill it was not a difference in spot patterns. Here's a picture of Odan from the TNG episode "The Host". As you can see he had some slight ridges and no spots at all. As for the Klingons, there has not been an official story regarding the difference in their appearance however the official explanation is the different races explanation. Here is a link to an article at ST.com which might help: Klingon Discrepancy Theories: Where Did the Ridges Go?
Wishfire 2 Posted October 8, 2004 Hmm, that's true, but then again, for the symbiont to be able to join succesfully, the physiology (not including ridges and spots) had to be identical. With Riker's physiology, the symbiont could only survive for a short period. Then again, at that time it seems that the symbiont was the dominant force, so... Odie 0 Posted October 8, 2004 The article is very interesting. I like the first 2 theories. They sound more reasonable than the rest.
welfconfed 2 Posted October 9, 2004 I've always thought it was most likely the result of some type of biological weapon that got away from them, and they simply found a cure by the 2270's. The reason they would want to keep it secret seems pretty clear: not only would it expose their bio-weapon program, but Klingons do not go around infecting their enemies with germs. It is dishonorable.
