The Lighter Side of DS9

Recommended Posts

I just started coming back posting on this forum and most of the topics in here have been about how depressed and how dark DS9 was. Yeah, it was more grittier and there was a war, and it does seem darker than the other series, but as series itself, it wasn't dark at all.

For one, look at the atmosphere on the Station. You walk down the promenade (The most beautiful set every created IMO) and you see red, yellow, green, orenge and so many other different colors. Than you see Ops and the greenish/grayish look. Hell, the Station didn't look dark, it looked beautiful, which is ironic because it was supposed to be, as sisko put's it "a monstracaty."

Than there is the epsiodes themselves, and how many outright comedies there were. I mean the ferengi episodes: Little Green Men, The Nagus, The Magnificent Ferengi were all LOL funny. Than you had some other fun episodes like Trials and Tribble-ations, The House of Quark, Looking for Par'Mach In All The Wrong Places etc. Heck, there were some serious episodes that had some fun moments. In The Cards is one example, as I look at that as the ultimate feel good episode in drama. I mean the war is coming, everything is looking so doom and gloom, so Jake and Nog, in trying to get a baseball card to Ben, cheers up the entire station. Ben's log at the end of the episode showed how light DS9 can get (If anyone has the exact wording, please post it because it is darn good).

Then there are many moments that were fun. One moment was in The Siege with Kira and Dax and the "Fly by the seat of your pants" dialouge. That was great.

What other moments showed a lighter side of DS9. They can be episodes, or scenes, or just subjective moments. We really need some positiveity in this forum.

:)

Hmm...You named most of the fun, lighter ones that I can think of...

"In the Cards" was always a favorite one of mine...I loved that character that went on about the 'Soulless Minions of Orthodoxy'...

"Take me out to the Holosuites" was a warm hearted one as well....

"Fascination" had it's fun moments with the crew all making out with each other and stuff....

"Badda Bing Badda Bang"...I think was the one where they try to help Vic from losing his casino...That was interesting in a fun way...

"Trials and Tribble-ations" was a fun one as they went back in time...I enjoyed that one...

"You are Cordially Invited" was one of the happier ones for the Jadzia/Worf fans...

"Who Mourns for Morn" was a bit fun to me, as everyone was after Quark for his 'awarded' fortune from Morn...

When I get a chance I'll get the audio of the log from In The Cards and post it.

As for other episodes there's "If Wishes Were Horses" had many funny moments in it, Jadzia being all over Bashir was so funny. "Explorers" wasn't a comedy episode but was a very uplifting story and has always been a favorite. And then there's "Profit and Lace", Quark as a woman. What else needs to be said? lol Also "His Way", that sweeping kiss Odo gives Kira was great and in the seventh season "Take Me Out To The Holosuite". I know that's not really a fan favorite but I always liked it.

DS9 had so many great moments in it it's hard to list them all.

Thanks. It's such a great moment in the series and why I love that episode, as well as the rest of season 5.

Heres another one you can add VBG. It might be too much of a spoiler, but it showed how great DS9 really really was in one scene. I saw the episode "In Purgatory's Shadow" earlier this week, and even though I have seen the episode a few other times, I was still very emotional during the death scene between Garak and Enabrin Tain. Here was the scene, under spoilers because it reveals some big elements to Garak's character.

TAIN: Elim... promise me one thing.

GARAK: I'm listening.

TAIN: Don't die here. Escape. Live...

GARAK: Let me guess... So I can make the Dominion pay for what they've done to you.

TAIN: You wouldn't deny an old man his revenge, would you?

GARAK: I'll do as you ask. on one condition. That you don't ask me this favor as a mentor, or a superior officer... but as a father asking his son.

TAIN: You're not my son.

GARAK: Father, you're dying. For once in your life, speak the truth.

TAIN: I should have killed your mother before you were born. You've always been a weakness I can't afford.

GARAK: So you've told me. Many times. Enabran, listen to me. All I ask

is that for this moment, let me be your son.

TAIN: Elim, remember that day... in the country. You must've been almost five.

GARAK: How can I forget it? It was the only day.

TAIN: I can still see you... on the back of that riding hound. You must've fallen off a dozen times. But you wouldn't give up.

GARAK: I remember limping home. You held my hand.

TAIN: I was very proud of you, that day.

"His Way" was another good lighthearted episode...Finally seeing Kira and Odo hook up, really put a smile on my face....aww.

"Business Association" another funny one thanks to Quark and one of Jeffrey Comb's characters, Brunt...

That is a common theme I have loved in all Star Trek series - the fact they all inject humour into various storylines. In DS9 I loved how even the 'bad guys' such as Dukat could even be given 'light' and comedic moments. My fave comic duo were Odo and Quark though!
