Q stole my bike 0 Posted May 2, 2004 I recently read in Self magazine that many people who get MRIs on their brains and have depression are in a better mood afterwards. They're theorizing that the magnets and such could effect the chemicals in the brain that cause clinical depression. I find this interesting because I have depression, and last December I had an MRI on my brain and thought it was a lot of fun...lol

nik 0 Posted May 2, 2004 Although skeptical, I have indeed heard of such things. Consider this: neurons function via electrochemical transmissions - ions. Charged particles (such as ions) change paths in magnetic fields. The MRI machine is a pretty strong field, too. Is it strong enough to affect electrochemical response? I don't know. We must also keep in mind that other local forces govern this, and that the ions are in general very constrained in scope.
