  1. I have mixed feelings about whether or not David Beckham coming to the U.S. will be succesful or not. On the one hand it could work and make soccer really take off or as Kor37 points it may not have any impact on the interest level of soccer in the U.S. In fact, not only did Pele play in the old NASL but Romario also signed with San Jose (I think) and that did not seem to have made an impact on fan interest when it comes to the MLS.

It will be interesting to watch that is for sure. I am leaning more to the 'not having an impact' at this point though.

  2. "The Mayan Indians were an ancient civilization throughout Mexico and South America. They were pretty much wiped out by Cortez and the Spaniards when they invaded Mexico. 2 interesting things about the Mayans. One is that they built pyramids that were remarkebly similar to those in Egypt. They are still being discovered in the jungles. Secondly, they created a pretty sophisticated calendar. The Mayan calendar goes up to 2012 and then stops. There are many people who believe that that is when the world will end."

That is pretty cool. I never knew that before.

  3. I have never heard of it but have also made a note to myself to try and find it/ask if anyone has heard of it the next time I go shopping.

Is this one of these soda's that is only available in the US?

Because there are some soda's that I have tasted that are not sold here in Canada or are available but only for a limited time and only every 4-5 years (or so it seems like). Cherry Coke for example was not sold in the province of Canada that I live in for years until I saw it on the shelf for about 2 months about a year ago.

  4. I will admit that it really is sad what Mike Tyson has become however whenever I think about how his boxing career turned out and after reading that article I could have sworn Mike Tyson was from the Twilight Zone!

In fact his boxing career would make an excellent original Twilight Zone episode if Rod Serling was still alive.

'Mr. Mike Tyson...age 40, once one of the greats...now just a piece of the rubble. Mr. Mike Tyson, who had fame fortune and everything anybody could wish for only to throw it all away and end up...in the Twilight Zone!' :P

  5. Congratulations to the 2006 Stanley Cup champion Carolina Hurricanes. They are a very good hockey team and in my mind the Conn Smythe Trophy awarded to Cam Ward was an obvious choice. I realise there were many candidates on the Carolina team but the number of mind boggling saves that Cam made not only through this series but during the entire playoffs makes him the most deserving member. My hat also go's out to Glen Wesley who waited 18 years to finally win the cup in much the same fashion as Ray Bourque did with Colorado a few years back.

Having said that the people of Edmonton should be very proud of their hockey team for such an unlikely and exciting run to the finals! It is just a bit disappointing that they came up short in the end. One player who I thought shined for Edmonton was netminder Jusi Markannen as he made some fantastic saves for Edmonton not only tonight but also throughout the series after he came in for Dwayne Roloson.

This Stanley Cup final series was an absolute classic!

  6. I think one of the main reasons that people do not come to this site anymore (at least the chatroom) is because the moderators keep an eye on what is being said. I was thinking about that the other day and it has occurred to me that is the reason. After the startrek.com chatroom was removed everybody came here and for a while the place was booming (around xmas of 2003). But then the new rules were implemented and nobody ever goes in there anymore. That is my take on it anyway. People like rick alverado etc. are never here anymore.

That is a good point that you made about the treads Odo.

  7. The Carolina Hurricanes have finally finished of the Sabres in 7 games just as I predicted setting the stage for what should be a great series between the Edmonton Oilers and the Carolina Hurricanes

    .

So with my final pick of the year, I am picking the Edmonton Oilers in 6 games over the Carolina Hurricanes although I hope it goes 7 games just for the sake of drama!. Therefore the Edmonton Oilers are your 2006 Stanley Cup Champions!

Like I said Odie, not this year! B)

  8. Oh boy, Where do I start? There were so many of them that I can only remember one or two at the moment.

Probably, when Picard gets emotional after fighting with his brother in 'Family' after the effects of the Borg from 'The Best of Both Worlds' starts to catch up with him.

Another moment that comes to mind and this is only because I saw this episode the other day is when Picard starts chuckling at the end of 'Tapestry' and when Riker tears down the set at the end of 'Frame of Mind'

Another moment and this is actually even more a favourite of mine that I just remembered is near the end of Descent part I when Lore says "The sons of soong have joined together and together we will destroy the federation!". That is good stuff I have to say. In fact that two part episode is one of my favourites as well.

  9. Even thought I did not get a chance to watch the Buffalo vs. Carolina game tonight, I still heard the result and the Carolina Hurricanes are also now just one win away from the Stanley Cup Finals. I still think the series is going to go seven games as Buffalo will win on Tuesday evening, at home I might add, but Carolina will take the series 4-3 on Thursday.

Odie, are you going to be following the World Cup tournament in two weeks time? or are you not interested in Soccer?

  10. Wow, what a game! The Oilers and going to the Stanley Cup finals in what is probably one of the most improbable runs in recent history. The Oilers have shown that not only can they win the high scoring games but also the tight 2-1 games as was the case tonight. They are now just 4 wins away from glory. This run is so similar to both Anaheim's run in 2003 and of course Vancouver's run in 1994. In fact it has been even longer since the Oilers were in the Stanley Cup final than it has the Canucks. 16 long years of waiting are finally over for the fans of Edmonton.

  11. Looks like the Carolina vs. Buffalo series is going to turn into a great series after Carolina convincingly beat Buffalo 4-0 earlier this evening. My prediction of Carolina in 7 still looks very possible.

On another note, Edmonton had better wrap up their series with Anaheim tomorrow or that could also turn into an interesting series. Of all the series played recently this is another one that I would not be surprised to see go 7 games. This series could easily be 2-2 at the moment. Maybe even 3-1 Anaheim but it is still 3-1 Edmonton with a chance to go to the Stanley Cup Finals tomorrow.

I misunderstood what you were saying about Junior Hockey as it sounded to me like you did not follow it but glad you do follow it Odie.

  12. Cool, the only reason I was asking is I have been following this year's Memorial Cup more closely than usual because the Vancouver Giants are in it and because I know junior hockey is also quite big in Eastern Canada. I have always followed the Memorial Cup but I only really got into following the regular season during the NHL strike last year. It is good stuff.

As for the comment you made Odie, I could not agree more that NHL teams from the south do not understand the importance of the Stanley Cup. As for the junior hockey, I am not totally surprised that you do not follow it as much but just thought I would ask anyway.

  13. Wow, what a game! The Oilers almost blew a 4-0 lead with half a period to go only to hang on and win 5-4. The one thing I will say is that if they play like that against either Carolina or Buffalo they will not last very long. I am referring to the way Edmonton played the last 10 or so minutes. It should have NEVER been that close.

I originally based my pick of Oilers in 7 on the way Anaheim played against Colorado and the way Edmonton played against San Jose, who was to know the Oilers would be one win away from a sweep?

Jack Bauer and/or Odie, do you follow Junior Hockey at all and the Memorial Cup tournament?

  14. With Carolina's victory earlier tonight it looks as though one of use will definitely be right as far as the number of games this series goes as you predicted either 5 or 6 and I predicted 7.

I cannot wait for game 3 tomorrow night between the Ducks and Oilers. It is a must win from Anaheim's point of view as if they don't they are in big trouble to say the least.

On another note, the S in my username stands for Scott which is in fact my name. Just thought I would clear the air with that once and for all.

I love your response to my last question Odie. Such a diplomatic answer. Of course, what else would I expect from you? I like it, its cute! :tribble:

  15. Wow, after the Oilers win earlier tonight it may not go seven games :tribble: . At least I have probably picked the right team to win one of the series!

Do you think after Buffalo's win in Game 1 that the Sabres are going to sweep, Odie? and if not how many games do you think it will take the Sabres?

  16. The Conference Finals are set with only four teams remaining and two interesting series.

    Western Conference Finals;

Edmonton vs. Anaheim pick: Oilers in 7

    Eastern Conference Finals;

Buffalo vs. Carolina pick: 'Canes in 7

That means it will be Edmonton vs. Carolina for the Stanley Cup final! I will admit, the pick I made for the Eastern Conference Final really is a toss-up in reality, but I have to pick somebody and on this occasion I am going with Carolina, sorry Odie not this year!.

  17. Well, the Carolina Hurricanes are in the Conference Finals. I still cannot believe they beat New Jersey. I just hope we do not end up with a Anaheim vs. Carolina Stanley Cup finals because if that happened the fans would never hear the end of it from Mr. Bettman bragging to everyone about what a great idea of his it was to expand. It makes me sick just thinking about that possibiliy. The worst thing is there may come a day when Nashville and Atlanta play each other in the finals. Now, that would be SICK! I wonder if the people in either of those cities even know they have a hockey team.

I will be back with my picks for the finals in a few days. After the Oilers/Sharks series.

  18.

Games in Buffalo are always at least 50-50, maybe leaning towards Toronto. However, it doesn't work the other way around. Crowds at the ACC are always predominently Leaf fans. Of course, no matter where the Leafs play there's always a fair contingent of Leaf fans.

True enough, In fact there are not only a large contingency of Leaf fans where ever they play but also a large contingency of Montreal fans as well.

Evey time the Leafs and Canadiens come here to Vancouver there tends to be more than 50% Toronto and Montreal fans at GM Place.

  19. BUFFALO WON THEIR SERIES AGAINST OTTAWA!!!!

    The series was very good.

For the life of my I can't remember the fullback for Buffalo Bills at that time. Thurman Thomas was the running back.

Growing up in Buffalo its required to know something about sports. Hockey is very big in Buffalo.

Ok, Thank You anyway Odie. I looked it up after I asked that and they had a few but no real 'number one' fullback because of the type of offense they ran in those days. Good Old Jim Kelly etc.. As for the Sabres, I cannot believe they won, in general. In my mind the Senators lost the series in Game 1 when they had the lead 4 or 5 times and ended up losing in overtime. That is a lot of luck though for one team to win three overtime games in a row. At least New Jersey are still alive. If they win tomorrow night in Carolina, it will be absolute bedlam for Game 6 in New Jersey. I would not count them out yet especially with Martin Brodeur and Co.

  20. Well, there will be not sweep for Buffalo this year. I realise the series is still in Buffalo's favour at 3-1 and only two teams have come back from 3-0 down but the one thing Ottawa has going for them is that 2 of the next 3 games potentially are in Ottawa, and if Ottawa wins Game 5 even though the they would never admit to it publicly one would have to think that a bit of doubt will be creeping into the minds of the Buffalo players. They would have had two chances to close the deal in that case and would still not have got the job done and if there happens to be a game 7...well then the Sabres are done! Guaranteed, as there is no way Ottawa would lose game 7 at home ice in that case.

On another note, I was thinking about the Buffalo Bills teams that went to four straight Super Bowls the other day and I was going through the players on that team and I could not for the life of me remember who the Fullback was for Thurman Thomas, I am totally embarrassed that I cannot remember but would you happen to know his name? I will probably remember when I hear it.

I am impressed by your knowledge. You really know your stuff...one of the few girls (no offense...I mean girls in the same way people say kids) I know of that has any knowledge of sports teams at all not to mention the history of the teams.

  21. *Sigh* I have to admit it does not look good for Ottawa at this point in time! and Colorado are definitely going to be swept now in all likelihood. I still cannot believe New Jersey is down 3-0 and that they could not hold a lead for 20 seconds in game two!...they deserved to lose since that was the case actually. Patrice Brisbois is a horrible defenceman for Colorado. I have never been a big fan of his as he has always made poor plays like the one he made the other night against Anaheim throughout his career.

I like the topic you started here Odie. It is really awesome!
