I was curious if they were going to throw that Irish bastard in there. I almost thought he might end up being one of the cadets in the bar scene. I just sat and watched Shore Leave with my son off the season 1 Blueray last week. I think if they had anymore fanwanky references it would have been too much. I'm just thrilled we got Kirks Kobayashi Maru scene.

If by not being my father's Star Trek it means this will gross 300 Million domestic and get raves from a large cross section of fans and casual movie-goers alike as opposed to being my fathers star trek and giving me a rehash of Insurrection and gross under a hundred million causing Paramount to slash Trek production and budgets even further I can live without it being my father's Star Trek.

I think the whole Trek timeline from STVI on through TNG and beyond really hinders the ability the make the Klingons the villains they were before TNG. Somehow, knowing that they will become allies, as uneasy of an ally as they will be, kind of takes the fun out of blowing up ships full of them. Even as far back as Star Trek 3 it was a renegade band not acting officially on behalf of the Empire. Worf made the Klingons noble, proud, and relatable regardless of their ups and downs since.
