If I had lived on a world in the DMZ...perhaps even if I had not,I'd be a Maquis. That was really low what the Federation did to the border colonies.
I still don't know what the writers were thinking.

The Elders in my community, including myself... held a ceremony honoring both America, our ancestors and all those who have shed their blood in defense of Freedom in this country.
After that we had a small display of fireworks, native dancing and traditional music. We also barbacued.Everyone had a good time.
And I think I saw the most beautiful woman I've ever seen tonight. She isn't a member of the tribal community, but one of the non-Native locals who were guests at our celebration.I'm going to find out who she is.I have to.She's going to be my wife one day.

We always talk about episodes in the literal sense of the term, but Star Trek has always been a thought provoking show that there are episodes that do a great job making you think and really try to wonder what the episode is really about. I propose this thread be about the deeper meanings of the shows. What I ask is that you pick one episode (You can pick more of course) from any series and tell us what you think it means. Delve deeper into it, and really think about what the episode is really all about.I'll start with one of my all time favorite episodes of any trek series...The Devil in the Dark. In literal terms, the title is probably talking about the Horta, but I have always had the assertion that the title isn't talking about the horta at all. What it's refering to is humanities prejudice not just to the Horta, but to things all around us. The episode starts out with this dark faceless creature and our humanity trying to survive. It ends in a direct opposite, with the Horta just trying to protect her children. This starts a working relationship and a friendship that will last forever. It's such a beautiful story and is really timely today.
I think you have summed up the episode pretty well.
I think many episodes of each series, including the animated series (tales I have only read and never watched) dealt with our natural human tendency to fear the unknown and anything or anyone strange to us.
It's funny,I want to expand on my thoughts here, but I am too sleepy. :P I cannot think properly.Perhaps tomorrow.

Happy Canada Day to all the Canadians here.
I have been to your beautiful country many times to attend native pow-wows and native rodeos, and I have always enjoyed myself there.

This is one of the few Deep Space 9 episodes that I have never seen.
Very upset about that. <_<
One of these days I will finally see it,though.I hear it was great.

Taking a break from studying at a tribal site on the Internet.Listening to Buddy Red Bow (a native american singer) and preparing dinner (rabbit)...smells delicious <_< .

Nerys laugh is a reflection of her spirit,as is our own.Her laugh was free and untamed. The laugh of a spirit that is comfortable with its own self.My father had such a laugh.I miss hearing it.

I have seen post-Dominion War,Deep Space Nine paperback books with Ro Laren on the cover.I've yet to read any.
I cannot imagine she will live long.Nerys will not put up with Laren's malcontent. <_<
She will perhaps wish that the Dominion had killed her during the Maquis purge.

I will try not to.
I find myself most often judging others based upon their character, which will be shown here by their posts in response to the topics.
As I came here to relax and discuss one of my favorite science-fiction shows, and maybe other things with people who may share some of my own interests,I do not want to create bad feelings....so I will not be critical of others.Hopefully they will extend the same courtesy to myself.

I would love that.
It is just too bad such a film will never happen. The final episode of DS9 made sure of that.Sisko has gone on to commune with the prophets for an idefinite period of time.Nerys is now commander of DS9.Worf is gone,Rom is the Nagus....
I thought that the Dominion War should not have been resolved in DS9.That would have made a great film.

The Bajora are my favorite alien species because of their fierce independence and their spiritual enlightenment.
I am surprised that no one has selected the Klingons. <_<

I have since read that originally Michelle Forbes/Ro Laren was slated to play opposite the benjamin Sisko character on DS9.I am glad that things transpired as they did.I cannot imagine DS9 without Nana Visitor's great Kira Nerys.
She was a proud, strong woman who believed in herself and her people. While embracing modern science and technology, she was unashamed of her spirituality (that really rocks <_< ),and she wasn't afraid of what anyone else thought of her.
My favorite DS9 character. If she were a real person,I'd probably be in love.
-
I would say Kira Nerys.
She was a warrior and a spiritual woman. Her home had been overrun by a hostile foreign power, and she had risked everything to defend her people.I respect that very much.I always felt a certain bond with the Bajorans, and Nerys. They had many qualities that I admired.

I hope the woman doesn't believe she's actually going to win a settlement,or even have her case make it to trial.
