  1. Section 31 was an allegory for an organization where the ends definitely justify the means. In the current American government, with freedom dying everywhere, this is a government that believes in this ideal.

Certainly, Sisko and Garak did dispose of the Romulan ambassador, but Sisko had a good deal of his conscience to answer to.

It seems to me that Section 31 wouldn't even bat an eyelid to do these things.

Furthermore, for such a small group... who do they answer to? How do we know they are always working in the best interests of the Federation? I do agree that the decision to committ genocide on the Founders was a good one, but what about espionage and their almost treasonous handling of the Klingon incident on Enterprise? They were willing to sacrifice the pride of Starfleet along with 84-some-odd people to protect the Klingon's deadly little secret... and what for?

  2. One of my favorite things about the movie is Kirk's personal death and rebirth.

All throughout the movie, he is plagued by things that make him feel old:

    a villain from decades past,

an ex-wife he hadn't talked to in years,

a son that he never knew,

    eyes that are failing,

a desk job at the Academy where he was rotting and going nowhere.

It takes his best friend dying to snap him out of his rut, and to give him enough life and vitality to defy Starfleet in The Search for Spock.

I always felt that William Shatner's goal in The Final Frontier was to further explore this character's coming of age and acceptance of his enemies (the Klingon's) that ends up saving the day in the Undiscovered Country. Without the trials, the pain that Kirk needs, to keep him human, we wouldn't have had such an exciting first six movies.

  3. When I think about humor in Enterprise, the first thing that pops into my mind is the fact that Trip got all the "poop jokes."

For example: in S1, he has to answer the "how do you go to the bathroom in space?" question posed from the students on Earth.

In The Xindi, he's crawling around with Archer in the septic tank ("Sewage takes on a different meaning when it's from twelve different species") and Trips gotta suck it up and duck his head under the COMPLETELY REVOLTING sludge... I was laughing harder than anybody in the house.

Enterprise was funny. Maybe I'm just a geek, but damn... "I love Lucy will be on in an hour."

Or even Shuttlepod One when homeboy Reed starts dreaming about T'Pol, giving her pet names. Trip's deadpan "who is (insert pet name I can't remember here)" was to die for.

I mean, sure, it didn't have a Captain Picard Day, but still!

Just because it's fun to trash on the new series, doesn't mean everybody's gotta join in cause it's cool.
