  1. The Movie To Be Or Not To Be, was one of my favorites. It was the story of a group of actors in 1939/40 Warsaw Poland It's a remake of a film Jack Benny and Carole Lombard starred in. Brooks and Bancroft were brilliant in it. I can remember going to see it several times at a thearter when it came out.

  2. I would argue that Michael Moore has done nothing less than take full advantage of the bully pulpit. Is he a great American, who knows? I'm sure some of the people on the list have done no more than Michael Moore, they took advantage of the bully pulpit. Are they great Anericans, once again who knows, opinions differ. Which is all I mean, opinons differ. Opinions are like rear ends every one has one. Our definitions and criteria for great Americans is most likely vastly different, as are the opinions of the Discovery channel producers as well

  3. Why shouldn't Michael Moore make the list? You do realize that people who espouse opinions and views not in "vogue" are no less American than choose one. Those opinions and their expression validate the American way of life. The freedom and right to dissent. The right of the minority to be heard. It's all part of the American way

  4. Each in and of itself is probable. Anyone who thinks we are all by our onsies in the universe is just wrong Just on the theory of just (I'm trying to say a bad word but can't) luck. If it happened here it happened elsewhere to.

Ghosts, on the other hand, to use a Trek analogy are like the Organians, beings of energy. As are we all. Energy never ceases to exist, it just changes form. We pass from the physical plane that we perceive, to where ever we end up. Ghosts have not made the jump to light speed as it were, and hang around.

  5. Majel Barrett at a convention, I almost literally ran into her. Wasn't looking where I was going and just saw someone out of the corner of my eye and stopped. I apologised rather profusely, never realized who she was until later that day ,I saw her up on stage and truly felt the fool. I saw Jim Doohan at a personal appearance at a Mall near me.

  6. I realize this is Trek heresy but Nurse Chapel and Yeoman Rand were basically eye candy. Grace Whitney and Majel Barrett, were in back in the day, hot. The novelization of the series greatly expanded the role each played

  7. I'm an old Trekkie. I always thought Trekker implied actual participation in the Trek universe . Any one here boldly go where no man has gone before? Unless you just deflowered a virgin, I think not. (pardon my vulgarity)

  8. If you have a mechanic you trust and dealwith frequently have him do a diagnostic check on the starter Ignition whatever and give you an estimate to fix it see if it's worth it. Seems to me the car is at the age it's going to nickel and dime you forever. Replacement an option here or what.

  9. Orson Card is correct in some of his observations. There was no through line in the series. That sort of thing didn't exist in any TV program of the time TOS arrived on the scene. Except for soap operas there was no "real Life" for any of the shows. They went from show to show with no connection. TV at the time had never experienced the phenomena of the Trek fan base. No other show had the kind of fans Star Trek did.

Yes, the acting by and large sucked, out loud. Star Trek had more ham on the screen every week than the Food Network. Yes the SFX were in a word, cheesy. With the budget allowed them every week they worked wonders. They couldn't afford Chekov and Sulu the first season. It was one or the other until the second season.

But the show let you escape, your little piece of hell for an hour every week. The acting was good enough to engage us. The SFX were the best they could afford and were not cheesy by the standards of the time. Compared to sci-fi which had gone before, the Trek SFX were amazingly good at the time. They tackled many social issues of the day in ways no other show could do. Trek was ahead of its time. I lived long and prospered because of its fan base and the quality of the stories being told. Non Trek fans could and did enjoy a number of episodes.

While Mr. Cards opinions, in a few cases are correcthis premise the the whole Star Trek genre is tragically flawed, is not. :naughty:

  10. I went to a convention in California about the time for Search for Spock. One of the things they showed there was the TOS blooper reel. Which was hysterical. Even if I wasn't in an auditorium full of ST conventioneers it would have been funny. Sidebar: the best part was, Walter Koenig doing a dialogue between Chekov and Walter Koenig. It was priceless. But that was the bloopers that got cut out. The stuff that made it in was often subtle but like who edited this a blind person?

  11. Well I have to admit I'm a tad predjudiced towards the TOS movies. So I really haven't gone to see the TNG in Theater. . To me there is nothing like watching James T. chewing up the scenery to become the star of a scene... Nut I love watching for the continuity editors and the cruddy editing the TOS films invariably had

I guess I'm a big fan of the series all of them but TOS especially and just a tad more irreverent than most about them.

  12. Do you see the films multiple times in the theaters?

Have you purchased the DVD's of the movies so you can find the bloopers and continuity screw ups that seem to show up in every movie?

Have you ever done the Uhura fan dance on a bet at a Super Bowl party?

    Well the first two anyway

:naughty: I have (The first two anyway,I'm not sure about the third. Allegedly there are photographs)

  13. Grace's bit as an extra in the bar scene during ST I, was her first acting job in a bit.

Grace played Rand in ST 1. She was the transporter chief.

    322335[/snapback]

IMDB list her as playing CPO Janice Rand. I myself only saw her in the Bar scene during the Enterprises (seemingly neverending) unveiling. I never saw her playing the Transporter operator. Damn it I may have to go and look now. Thanks a heap :yahoo:

  14. Their real lives turned out somewhat different. Majel Barrett married the boss. Grace Lee Whitney became an out of work alcoholic for a while. Grace's bit as an extra in the bar scene during ST I, was her first acting job in a bit.

Let's face it Janice Rand had Kirks fingerprints all over her tushie.

Nurse Chapel apparently had a majorly unrequited love with that Vulcan dude what's name
