master_q 0 Posted March 17, 2005 StarTrekFans.net's-- Official Chat Room -- Star Trek Trivia ~ Session #33 ~ I will be hosting the official 33rd live Star Trek trivia session Saturday, March 19, at 4:00PM US/Eastern-Time in the StarTrekFans.net chat room. I hope you can make the time to come. :P Pre-Live Chat Room Trivia: Yes, once again pull out a piece of paper and a writing utensil because it is time for Master Q's Pre-Live Triviaaaa!! Just before session #33 starts (this Saturday at 4PM EST) send me a private-chat message containing your answer to the below question. The first two people to answer correctly in a private-chat message will both get four official trivia points! *Snaps Finger!* Muhahahah (Yes..... this is yet another attempt by a "Q" to be entertained by placing a human in a puzzle) Now, human, you have the choice of three doors! One of the doors will lead you to the escape of my twisted Q game!! Behind the other two doors is the vacuum of space! After you selected the door (without opening it), I will then open one of the other two doors and reveal the vacuum of space. You now select a door. I open one of the other doors and reveal the vacuum of space. I now offer you the chance to switch your choice to the remaining door. Should you take the switch? master_q 0 Posted March 25, 2005 StarTrekFans.net's -- Official Chat Room -- Star Trek Trivia ~ Session #33 ~ Pre-Live Chat Room Trivia: I like this question because it is very straightforward, but at the same time the question is very easy to think that your chance of winning when choosing to change really comes down to not mattering because it would seem to be a fifty-fifty chance. That is not the case at all. If the puzzle was reworded in a slightly different way, then it would be a fifty-fifty. Just because we have two possibilities does not mean they are the same. So this makes the question kind of tricky. The first part of the puzzle is one of the keys to solving this deductively. I announce that after you pick, I will then choice to open a door that leads to the vacuum of space. This is not chance versus me just opening one of the other doors randomly. I am not doing that randomly. After you then pick a door (without opening it!), I then open one of the two other doors that leads to the vacuum of space. This does not tell you that picking to switch will be a exact 50% chance, independent if you pick to do so or don’t. When you first picked the door there is a 1/3rd chance that the door you picked is the correct one. Your chance is 1/3. From the start I told you that I will give you information about the doors. I gave you that information after that 1/3rd chance of you picking initially. If you stay with the door you initially picked before I gave you the info about the vacuum of space behind one of the doors, then you just have that 1/3rd chance. However, if you pick to switch, then in the first case you lose, but in the other two you will win, your chance of then picking the correct door is 2/3. Not that hard after all. Maybe we could actually play this game in the next session a few times. Session's Questions & Answers: Turning The Internet Broadcasting Camera On (please wait...)
