Humpback whales lose protected status in proposed new changes in Canad

2 posts in this topic

Environment Minister Leona Aglukkaq, with advice from Fisheries Minister Gail Shea, is recommending that the Northern Pacific population of humpback whales be downgraded from "threatened" to "species of special concern." The recommendation for the change to the Species at Risk Act was published in the Canada Gazette Saturday.

The environmental impact of having protected species limits the dialogue around the Pipeline being proposed to bring heavier tanker traffic along British Columbia coastline, one of the habitats of this whale species.

The timing is making the science of the decision suspect, and more clarity is needed to expand upon this regulatory change and the long term effects upon the species.

Here's hoping the science will prove out this recent announcement to change in regulation.

The Voyage Home took some liberties with Spock's mind meld, but the conversation in the pick up truck about Gracie knowing she was pregnant, with Spock, Kirk and the biologist, was some of the best writing to make mainstream media, about the importance of sustainability being about families of their species, not just a genus attached to its word, ie species. My link
