A l t e r E g o 9 Posted June 20, 2008 Check out this time-lapse video of a trench dug by the lander. You can clearly see some of the material dug out of the ground "sublimates", that is; turns directly from a solid into a gas over time which is what scientists would expect to see ice dug from below the surface do upon being exposed to the 'atmosphere'. http://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/phoenix/...ress/14060.html Though visually exciting, this does not yet definitely prove water ice exists on Mars, it could be some other element mimicking expected results. A sample of the 'ice' must first be analyzed to verify it truly is water ice, a task so far hindered by 'clumping' of the soil/'ice' samples. This clumping effect has kept the material from actually fitting into the experiment box however, a device for grinding the samples finer is available and should be utilized soon.
