How has the internet changed our world?

Recommended Posts

I've been thinking about this, already some things have changed but I foresee potential for greater change because of the internet. What sort of changes do you foresee?

One thing I see is that people in rural areas have access equal to urban dwellers in news and even online shopping.

Another is that it is gradually changing the face of education. You can already apply, enroll and take courses all online. I suspect the trend will continue.

I believe it will also change the face of the workforce. One example would be fewer postal workers as people send email and pay bills online. I also think it may eventually lead to a decline in books as more information becomes available online. One good example would be encyclopedias - which are much easier to update online than in print.

It is changing the way music is purchased - you can pay and downlowd by song. This cuts out the middle men in the manufacturing of CD's, shipping mailing etc. which would mean some job loss - but maybe more jobs in computer related materials.

It is also changing the face of the dating scene. Online dating services are major money makers and some people think they're better than more traditional methods of meeting someone.

So what other changes do you see and do you think these changes are good or bad?

I'm not sure if all of the impersonal contact is really good or bad?

I agree with what you said. I think that the nonpersonnal contact is bad myself.

VBG i think was talking about computers and tv becoming one or something like that.Well i envision something more or less of the same.TV will become obsolete once internet speeds increase and memory increases. The computer will be the source of not only the internet but your cable tv and everything that has to do with Media.I think all forms of media(besides books i dont think they will ever dissappear alltogether I mean we saw Picard read alot)will dissappear completely and will all become one with the internet.

Also the music,tv and whatever industries will lose the long battle with Piracy and go under. :)

For me internet is a chance to meet people from all over the world and to learn a bit how they think and what is important to them. I do appreciate that opportunity.

Since I do not know so many star trek fans I'm glad to be able to exchange my thoughts with them.

And to chat with other people so far away from me thrills me!!! I do like that.

The internet has made it possible to access all kinds of information within split seconds.........You can do a research paper from home...no need to go to the library. You can shop, down load games, music, make hotel, and airline reservations. You can send email, make new friends, get up to date on the latest news. ...You can even find lost loved ones, book a cruise...........all of this wonderful things are now possible because of the internet. However, there is a downside of spending day after day in front of a computer screen, and becoming so dependent on it. For when something goes wrong with it, those of us who aren't used to "Plan B," can feel helpless, frustrated and even irritable. Also I think too much time at the computer has a negative affect on one's interpersonal skills. <_<

One very excellent effect of the internet was to bring us all together at STARTREKFANS.NET.

I think the internet has helped many people discover they are not alone as they face various situations in their lives. There are so many sites/boards that offer support to people struggling with situations from the serious (illnesses, etc.) to the not so serious (my only Trekkie friends are online).

This is so true. It has offered a real support system for many who would be otherwise isolated and alone. <_<

For us the changes have been twofold, online we are able to find the things we used to need the library for so less commuting back and forth has been a big time saver for us.

The first reason however was Trek, I had alienated pretty much all of our friends with my constant talking about it. That was the primary reason we got connected to the net, so I could find others as interested in and willing to talk about it.

<_< I hit the jackpot with STF.N!

It's given me the chance to access a lot more information at the push of a button. The abiltity to communicate with people eith the same interest as my self. Plus it's allowed me to buy items that I could never find around here.

Hi there

I find the internet very useful for finding information about absolutely ANYTHING. Its so much easier than going to the library and trying to hunt down a reference book. The net is really fast also, getting information is almost instantaneous.

Its also very easy to access these days too, as heaps of places have computers to get online................libraries, internet cafes, univerisities even backpacker hostels. I like being able to use the internet to look for jobs aswell. I can apply for jobs online, email my resume and other details to employers and this is which is much easier than posting the stuff by snail mail. As I don't know many other Star Trek fans, its great to be able to come here and reply to posts. I also love being able to correspond with other people all over the world. I chat with several people on AOL IM from the US and one from Canada.

I love the idea of emails. I don't like using the phone most of the time, so sending emails is great for me because the person on the receiving end can read it when they are ready. Whereas I find whenever I call somebody on the phone, they are usually busy and have no time to talk. A good friend of mine is living in London right now and she sends me regular emails. Snail mail letters would take a while to get here and sometimes they get lost in the post. Emails only take minutes to reach another computer (although sometimes they do get lost in cyberspace). I also love AOL IM and MSN messenger. Chatting with someone from the otherside of the world still amazes me. Broadband internet is rather handy too, as it keeps the phone line free. However, I find that I often get on the internet so people can't get hold of me on the phone  I always screen my calls too so broadband would be sort of defeating the purpose in my case :(
