:spock: I just found out my oldest daughter's boyfriend works for this company. He's been talking about some top secret Star Trek project for months...I didn't quite believe him. But HERE it is!! He just sent me a MySpace comment telling me about it.

Cryptic Announces Star Trek Online, Posts Screenshots

Online games developer Cryptic Studios plans to unveil video footage of the game at the upcoming Star Trek convention in Las Vegas on Aug. 10.

Online games developer Cryptic Studios on Monday said it has licensed the right to develop a massively multiplayer game set in the Star Trek universe and posted screenshots of the forthcoming title to its Web site.

Cryptic, developer of the highly acclaimed game "City of Heroes," said it obtained the rights from CBS Consumer Products. Financial details were not disclosed.

Cryptic said it plans to unveil video footage of the game at the upcoming Star Trek convention in Las Vegas on Aug. 10. The company also plans a live Webcast of the event.

Trekkies won't have to wait that long to get a glimpse of the title, however. Cryptic has posted several Star Trek Online screenshots to the game's Web site. Some depict shots of various types of vessels in outer space, while others show planet surfaces that presumably will be used in game play.

"Can you find the Gorn in this forest?" asks the caption on one of the screenshots, referring to a lizard-like creature that battles Capt. Kirk in the original Star Trek episode "Arena."

According to the Web site, the game will feature "everything from the elegant domes of Starfleet Academy to the ancient temples of Vulcan," home planet of Leonard Nimoy's legendary character, Mr. Spock.

Players also will be able to choose from multiple races for their characters. "Command your own starship as a Federation Captain or a Klingon Warrior," the site teases. Missions will take place in deep space or on planet surfaces. "Command your vessel in thrilling space battles, or beam down to planets with your away team," the Web site says.

Cryptic said the game will use the same graphics and game-play engine that powered its previous titles. The game will be available in both console and PC formats. The company did not announce a ship date.

Go here. (At least I think that's the right place. :congrats:)

Not only will MMO developer Cryptic be unveiling Official Star Trek Convention in Las Vegas; they're also bringing out the big guns for their presentation: Leonard Nimoy, aka Mr. Spock. This -- coupled with their GenCon sponsorship announcement earlier this week -- has us convinced that Cryptic is really going for the throat when it comes to scoring the nerd vote.

It's uncertain what part (other than fan service) the 77-year-old actor will play during the game's onstage reveal, much less to what degree he'll potentially be involved with Star Trek Online -- perhaps a voice acting reprisal of his career-making role? It certainly wouldn't be the first time Nimoy has lent his talents to a videogame, having served as the narrator in Sega's delightfully odd Dreamcast game Seaman.

The Official Star Trek Convention kicks off tomorrow, August 6, with the Star Trek Online announcement coming the final day of the show, August 10. Fans can see what all the fuss is about either in person or by watching the live stream of the event on Cryptic's Star Trek Online site.

suh-weet! I too can't wait for the release

I am not big into gaming but I do have a couple questions about STO.

Is it considered canon and 2nd, is there somewhere the "story" of what's occurred can be read?

I am primarily interested in events after the desruction of Romulus.

The fight for the future – and the past – is heating up. Prepare to boldly go when no-one has gone before... with Star Trek Online.

Federation agents from the 31st century are conducting covert operations to find new recruits. They’ve gone back to the 23rd century, in the early days of Starfleet, to find likely candidates.

For a limited time, these captains can become special Temporal Agents, recruited to track down and disable probes seeded throughout the timeline by the Na’kuhl and their allies. 23rd Century Captains created since the launch of Agents of Yesterday on February 14 are already Temporal Agents in this new reward system. All objectives listed below have been kept track of on currently created characters. All 23rd Century captains created before April 4, 2017 will also be able to take part in this system.

Temporal Agents will play through all of the usual story missions, but in many of them they’ll uncover probes left by the Na’kuhl to gather intel or drop off equipment for enemy operatives. By completing puzzles, Temporal Agent captains can unlock those probes and disable them – and get great rewards in the process. In some cases, the interference of the Na’kuhl may result in new enemies or revelation of new secrets in these missions.

In addition to hunting down temporal probes, Temporal Agents will be able to use their special Temporal Transponder item to claim rewards for completing other tasks, such as finishing story arcs, gaining Reputations, completing Duty Officer commendations, finishing Admiralty campaigns and learning Specialization skills. Unlocking these rewards will also earn rewards for other characters on your account, in addition to providing your Temporal Agent with new traits, gear, and bonus marks.

Temporal Agent Rewards

The rewards for playing a new temporal recruit are many – and the tasks are those that many captains will complete as they play through the story arcs. Long-term dedication is also rewarded with new bonuses.

Find Temporal Probes: Finding and disabling Na’kuhl temporal probes in various missions will award your Temporal Agent with a small box of Marks of your choice. Finding half of the temporal probes will additionally award you with the new Trait: Rapid Support, which reduces the cooldown time of your Engineering, Science, and Tactical Fleet Captain ability. Finding all of the probes will unlock an Improved version of the Rapid Support Trait.

Reach Rank of Admiral: At each new rank you’ll gain a package of gear to enhance your space weapons, space equipment, space consoles, or ground equipment – your choice.

Specializations: Earn Specialization Points and spend them on skills in Specialization Trees – complete full trees to earn more credit. You’ll earn experience boosts and special Temporal Agent Tech Upgrades, and upon completion of three full Specialization trees, you’ll earn additional Tech Upgrades and all of your Improved Specialization Traits will be increased to Superior versions – giving you better abilities from Command Frequency (Command spec), Predictive Algorithms (Intel spec), Pedal to the Metal (Pilot spec), and Linear Progression (Temporal Operative spec) for all captains on your account.

Research & Development: Reaching level 1 in any R&D school grants you five R&D Duty Officers as well as a Rare Aegis Duty Officer. Reaching level 5 in any R&D school grants you a one-time boost of any school to level 10.

Play through Story Arcs: You’ll gain packages of Fleet Marks, Dilithium, and Energy Credits for playing through each Story Arc, including everything through the Breen arc, as well as the Delta Quadrant arc, the Future Proof arc, and the new Yesterday’s War arc. Finishing half of the Story Arcs unlocks the new Trait: Critical Systems, which grants a bonus to critical hit and critical severity for a short time after using any Emergency Power ability. Completing all of the Story Arcs grants an Improved version of this Trait for all characters on your account.

Admiralty: As you complete tiers of various Admiralty campaigns you’ll gain bonus one-time ship cards and pass tokens. Reaching level 3 in three Admiralty campaigns will give you a bonus that permanently gives you extra experience earned from completion of Admiralty assignments for all captains on your account.

Reputations: Persevere in gaining Reputations and you’ll gain bonus Energy Credits, Dilithium vouchers for use in Reputation Stores, and bonus Marks so that you can purchase the special gear offered by Reputations. When you reach rank 5 in all nine current reputations – Task Force Omega, Temporal Defense Initiative, Nukara Strikeforce, New Romulus, Dyson Joint Command, 8472 Counter-Command, Delta Alliance, Iconian Resistance, and Terran Task Force – your Reputation projects will be updated so that any project that awards special gear will now replace Mk XII very rare gear with Mk XIII ultra-rare gear instead.

Duty Officer Commendations: Work toward reaching rank 4 commendations in every category of Duty Officer commendations. You’ll receive assortments of Temporal Investigator Duty Officers of increasing rarity, and when you reach rank 4 in six commendation categories you’ll receive a unique Temporal Investigator Duty Officer of Epic quality for all captains on your account.

Fleet: Join a fleet after level 30 and get a package of Fleet Marks and Fleet Dilithium Vouchers.

Console Captains, we are happy to announce the date that you will all be able to play Star Trek Online’s Twelfth Season: Reckoning. Launching on Xbox One and PlayStation4 on April 18, the new update sends players on a mission with the Lukari to investigate an ominous new threat, the dreaded Tzenkethi. The latest update to consoles grants captains access to content that was recently introduced on PC, including a new featured episode, crafting school, two Tzenkethi space queues and a full space battlezone.

Season 12 – Reckoning centers around the new featured episode, “Of Signs and Portents.” Captains will join the Lukari on a mission to investigate weaponized use of protomatter in a new region of the Alpha Quadrant. Further evidence leads them to the Tzenkethi, a highly intelligent, militant species who plan on using the deadly substance to build a bomb capable of wiping out entire planets. Teaming up with legendary Klingon General Rodek (voiced by actor Tony Todd), the Alliance must find a way to stop the Tzenkethi from enacting a potentially cataclysmic attack. Season 12 also unlocks expansive new content for players to discover, including the Lukari Restoration Reputation, the new Kits and Modules Research School, a full space battlezone and two new space queues, “Gravity Kills” and “The Tzenkethi Front.”

Get ready, Captains, because in less than a month you’ll have to test your mettle against the power of the Tzenkethi. Will you be ready?

Star Trek Online’s Season 13 – Escalation will launch on April 25 on PC, it was revealed by Perfect World Entertainment and Cryptic Studios. Season 13 – Escalation sends players on a mission with the Lukari to help them rediscover their ancient origins, while also dealing with an imminent threat by the Tzenkethi. The newest update to Star Trek Online continues the epic Tzenkethi War story arc and marks the debut of the brand-new War Games system, which pits teams of players against each other in competitive PvE scenarios.

Star Trek

The War Games system offers a fresh type of queue that allows two five-person teams to battle head-to-head in competitive PvE scenarios. To keep players on an even playing field, a new Player Potential system has been introduced that will match players of similar skill in the same matches.

Star Trek

The War Game system will also have a new reputation tied to it, including, for the first time ever, class specific-ship and captain gear. Captains can mix and match gear they earn from any class and also have the option to specialize. To support the new War Games system, a full rebalance pass has been made to ground and space combat to ensure that no matter what choice captains make when outfitting their skills or ship, it isn’t a wrong one.

Star Trek

As fans know, Star Trek Online is a free-to-play massively multiplayer online game where players can pioneer their own destiny as Captain of a Federation starship, become a Klingon Warrior and champion the Empire through the far reaches of the galaxy, or rebuild the Romulan legacy as the commander of a Romulan Republic Warbird.

Star Trek

In Star Trek Online, players have the opportunity to visit iconic locations from the popular Star Trek universe, reach out to unexplored star systems and make contact with new alien species. Star Trek Online is currently available on PC, PlayStation4 and Xbox One. Season 13 – Escalation will be available on consoles at a later date.
