"Bond Outdated" Says Damon

Recommended Posts

HOLLYWOOD - Matt Damon is urging 007 creators to bring James Bond into the 21st century, branding the current incarnation outdated and misogynistic.

The actor, who plays screen spy Jason Bourne in the blockbuster franchise, insists characters like his emphasize the need for change.

He says, "(Bond is) an imperialist and he's a misogynist. He kills people and laughs and sips martinis and wisecracks about it.

"Bourne is this paranoid guy. He's on the run. He's not the government; the government is after him. He's a serial monogamist who's in love with his dead girlfriend and can't stop thinking about her. He's the opposite of James Bond."

And Paul Greengrass, Damon's director of Bourne Ultimatum and its 2004 predecessor The Bourne Supremacy, agrees Bond needs to move forward.

He says, "He's an insider. He likes being a secret agent. He worships at the altar of technology. He loves his gadgets. And he embodies this whole set of misogynistic values. He likes violence. That's part of the appeal of the character. He has no guilt. He's essentially an imperial adventurer of a particularly English sort.

"Personally, I spit on those values. I think we've moved on a little bit from all that 'The martini shaken, not stirred.'"

So, that's why Casino Royale was the highest money maker in Bond history, because it's outdated. Obvious I don't agree that it is, Casino Royale made enough money that they already have plans for a 23 Bond film that has a released date of 2010 with the next movie set to come out next year.

I wouldn't call Bond a monogamist, but he has loved at least three women in the films so far, especially Tracey, whom he married. He still loves her, which is shown in later films where she is mentioned and he gets depressed.

I'm not certain what Greengrass and Damon seem to be implying.

Do they wish James Bond movies to become Jason Bourne clones?

There is a definite envy going on here IMO.

Well Damon better get over it. I think this will be the last of the Bourne movies. There is nowhere they can go with the character once he finds out who he is so the franchise has to end.

I like the Bourne films better than the Bond films, but Bourne won't reach the "cultural icon" status that Bond already has.

Agree, Van Roy! Bond is a cultural icon. He is also also a creation of his time. To totally update him would change him. IMO it would be better to develop a new spy character. Of course, they could always come out with "Son of Bond," "Daughter of Bond," or "Mrs. Bond." There are three franchise killers! :)

Maybe Damon wants to play Bond someday, but do it his way. If that's the case, I'd say "Yeah, lotsa luck, buddy!" :)

If Bond didn't have a license to kill, didn't use the latest in modern technology, didn't drink, smoke, gamble, and plow his way through several women every movie, he wouldn't be Bond. A lot of men would like to be Bond, and a lot of women would like to be with Bond. Can anyone say that about Bourne? I kinda doubt it.

I've never seen any of the Bourne movies, but my son loves them. As for Bond, they pretty much updated him with the last movie. I thought it was great and I think the franchise will continue for quite some time.

Actually, Bond hasn't smoked on film for some time now. He still drinks heavily however.

Well, yeah, but then it was a cigar in Cuba. If we have to make an exception that would be it.
