Queer Eye for the Straight Guy

Recommended Posts

Has any one here seen the new TV show "Queer Eye for the Straight Guy"? I first saw it on NBC but it now is on the Bravo channel. Its about 5 gay men who specialize in different categories like fashion, interior decorating, food, and culture and they do a complete makeover for straight men including re-doing his apartment. Its a pretty funny show and very entertaining for the whole family.

The most recent episode I saw was about a guy who wanted to ask his girlfriend to marry him,so the 5 gay guys went to his apartment and began making their plans.

While a couple of them take the guy out to buy a whole new wardrobe and get his hair cut,the others stay back at the house and re-do his whole place. They give his place a new paint job and buy a few new furniture pieces and get new bedding for the bed, the man who is the food expert finds out the guys girlfriend loves chocolate so he creates a chocolate mousse inside a large chocolate box,he then fills a white chocolate box with rasberries, and then he gets a small chocolate box for the straight guy to put the diamond ring to surprise the girlfriend with.

To me its funny watching this guy being dragged around town by these gay guys as they give him this makeover. By the end of the episode the girlfriend came over at dinner, enjoyed the chocolate and was stunned to find an engagment ring in the little chocolate box.Oh and she said yes to her boyfriends proposal!!!! :look:

If there is nothing else to watch on TV then I recommend this show, its entertaining and a little informative to us straight guys who want to romance the ladies!

They have a new term: Metrosexual - straight guys that have the artistic flair and cultural refinement of gay men. Alright isn't that stereotyping. Are there no gay men that drink beer and belch while watching football games?

Except for the news, some sports(mostly college, amateur),PBS,and a very few other types of programs(history, national geographic, star trek-of course, etc)I avoid watching television. You would have to drag me kicking and screaming in front of the ol' boob tube to sit through any of the popular shows now-a-days.

That is downright insulting. I'm so fed up with the media.

Oh, good...I was hoping to hear she said yes at the end, both times I tried to catch it, I missed the end.

I think the show is amusing, the guys are very funny...even though in the episode with the surprise party, I kinda think they should have asked the guy whether or not his family and friends would eat something like (never can spell it, so I will say what it is) goose liver. The people we saw on the show either politely spit it into a napkin or quickly sipped a lot of champagne...$150 dollars worth of appetizers down the drain.

I don't think we get this program on any of our channels in Canada but it sounds great. Glad it was so helpful for you RC especially since I know how much you love facials.

Here's a question.  Why did all of the decorators have to be gay?  Why couldn't some of them be straight?  Did they only look for gay decorators, and if so, isn't that sexual discrimination?

No it's called stereotype in that many people have a preconceived notion that any man who is a decorator is gay. I had a guy for a hair stylist many years ago and he complained to me that the stereotype was for men in that line of work was either they were gay or like the Warren Beatty character from Shampoo. He was neither - a happily married guy who only wanted to be with his wife.

I agree with Takara. The stereotype that any man in a profession that sounds the least bit feminine must be gay definitely exists. I imagine that Bravo or whoever first came up with the show simply used that stereotype to their own benefit -- you can't deny that it's a hook. And the more people who become curious about the show, the more watch it. So get them curious right from the first, with the whole concept. It's a gamble that's certainly paid off this time. I hear that Bravo is getting its highest ratings ever with this show. In an hour long shopping excursion yesterday, I heard at least two passersby discussing it. Personally, I think it's a great show. The Fab Five are a riot.

Yeah, well, I hate steriotypes. Females complain if women aren't treated as "strong feminine characters" on a TV show, but no one complains if men in certain jobs are portrayed as gay?

If it were one or two gay people, it wouldn't bother me too much. It's the fact that all six of them are gay that bothers me.

All five of them, actually. While I don't approve of stereotypes, realistically speaking, I think they're inescapable; and in a capitalistic society, whatever sells is what will be produced. Shows and movies where women are not treated as 'strong feminine characters' obviously sell well, because there are still plenty of them out there. Stereotypical or not, the show is extremely popular, and I think it's good quality as well. To each their own, though. Diversity of opinion is what makes life interesting. ;)

Okay, you've discussed the stereotype that all men in certain professions are gay. But no one addressed my question - isn't it also a stereotype that all gay men are artistic and sensitive - not a bad stereotype. In other words are there any gay guys that eat beanie weanie's out of a can?

Its good to see I'm not the only one who enjoys this wonderful show.I find it very informative and I can now make my own mousse! :)

Hey UH,I'm sure there has to be a gay man out there somewhere that eats beanie weenies.

As someone who has spent years working in the theatre I know about the gay sterotype thats placed on men who act. I was in a Shakespeare play a couple of years ago (Much Ado About Nothing) and some friends of mine came to see the performance. One of those friends overheard a conversation by a boy and his father that was seated in front of her and she said the boy asked his father "Is he one?" and the father replied,"If he is wearing tights, then he is." Talking about teaching your kids the wrong lesson. But we all laughed about it because out of the whole cast there was only one gay guy,and he was the only one NOT wearing tights!

They say ignorance is bliss, and some people like to remain blissfull.
