Complete synopsis:

Click for Spoiler:

The Away Team beams down to a building on a nearby planet, hoping to find a connection between the structure and the ship fragment. When Riker, Worf and Data materialize in front of a revolving door that leads them into the casino of the Hotel Royale, their communication with the U.S.S. Enterprise is suddenly cut off. The away team is trapped by the revolving door, which continually leads back into the casino lobby, full of employees and patrons showing no signs of life.

While the Away Team searches for an exit, the drama of a bellboy preparing to fight an evil gambler for the woman he loves unfolds before them. In another one of the hotel rooms, the crew discovers the body of an American Air Force officer and among his remains, a novel titled "The Hotel Royale," the story being lived out before them. As communication with the U.S.S. Enterprise is restored, Data reads from the officer's diary that the world was created by aliens who misinterpreted the novel to reflect the preferred human way of life.

Back in the casino, Riker realizes that the key to their exit may be found in the book. Picard tells Riker that the story ends with "foreign investors" buying out the hotel, and life for the other characters going on as before. Data, calculating percentages at the crap table, quickly breaks the bank, buying the hotel and escaping with the rest of the team out of the perpetual drama.

Funny you mention this episode I watched it today on DVD ;)

I love it. It is not a "typical" episode, there are almost no starships (only the Enterprise), no phasers, no future weapons... Only the away team in this nice hotel simulation and an annoyed Jean-Luc who has to read a "stupid" novel  to find a way out for the away team... I just LOVED this episode.

:o

Cool, I liked this one, too. Infact I thought it was ones of the better ones IMO.

OK! Takara! Noticed the thumbnail of DATA and the cards......I like the cowboy hat!

This is one of my favorites from season 2 but Elementary Dear Data is my favorite overall from season2.

Excellent early episode though.

This is one of my favorite TNG episodes. I don't know why, I just like it. It was also one of the first ones I ever saw, so maybe that has something to do with it.

I thought it was cool how when they were in that black room with the revolving door, all you could see was their shirts and their heads. It looked like they had no legs! So weird.

This one was very funny. "What do you call this planet?" "Earth, what do you call it?" "We call it Theta Eight." "Charming." Oh, that's a ton of laughs. It was especially funny when they tried to get back out and came right through to the hotel again. That's happened to me with several revolving doors. I love the things. I could get lost in one of those...

Worf and the elevator. He thought it was broken. And then Data pushes the button... heh, good stuff. And the whole phone conversation. Worf is a wonderful conversationalist. All he did was growl into the phone "YES?" "NO!"

And Data was too cool with his cowboy hat and his dice playing skills.

This was a great episode twisted around a very interesting idea. Think about it. How often have you wanted to live the stories from your favorite books? An interesting idea indeed.

"What do you call this planet?"  "Earth, what do you call it?"  "We call it Theta Eight."  "Charming."

  That was great. I think part of it's appeal was seeing characters from the future in our time (even a really corny time).

I've always found that a lot of people didn't like this episode but I thought it was very interesting. It's actually quite original and the plot was straight out of something that they might have done in TOS.

I agree...

Alien captor to Spock

"What do you call those?"

Spock to alien captor;

"I call them ears"

It may have originally been something for TOS. Season 2 was the year of the writers' strike and they actually pulled out a bunch of old TOS stories that hadn't been done and updated them for TNG.

This episode is one of my favourites not just of the episodes in season 2 but for the whole run (I have LOTS of favourites).

You're absolutely right. It very well could be the case.

The Royale was a good episode with an interesting storyline(and storyline resolution).Very watchable.I've seen in quite a few times and never find my mind wandering while watching the show.I would've liked to find out more about the aliens who designed that environment for the dead astronaut.
