urgent chemistry question!

Recommended Posts

Does anybody know how to draw an electron dot diagram for

PCl (small 5)

SF (small 6)

It says on the sheet that these molecules don't obey the octet rule

I'd really appreciate some help if anybody knows!

Hope this helps you out a bit ( I am majoring in Chemistry & Physics, emphasis on Chem B) )

It is easier than me drawing it or scanning it out of my notes.

That is PCl5, be back in a sec with SF6

Here is a non Lewis Dot or Electron dot diagram of SF6

THey do not obey the octet rule because Phosphorus can hold up to 10 electrons around its outer shell, and Sulfur can hold 12, when most can only hold 8

This may or may not be beyond what level you are doing, cassidy... but later on with chem you will see this special exception to that rule play a big part in certain reactions.

Find the sulfur in the pic below.. notice it has six lines around it, that shows the 12 electrons are bonded to the other atoms in the chain. And that is just one example on the exception to the octet rule

That Sulfur compound in the pic is called a tosylate, and is used in reactions in Organic chem.

another question..... what does the structural formula of

H (2) O (2) look like?

it all comes down to protocols basically, and i'm not 100% sure what it is. is it all in one line, or is it snake-like, etc?

our teacher should explain these things before giving us a massive homework task! there are like 50 billion electron dot diagrams and structural formulas we have to complete.
