I'd put myself as a liberal-leftie, as can be seen by my sig. Feel free to expand and debate your political stance, and if anyone isn't sure where they roughly stand I know a few good political questionnaires.

Bid high, bid often!

I am a Centralist, at least according to a few questionaires I did at one time or another.

So basically for lack of a better description I am for the most part neither right or left leaning, and neither authortarian or liberal or conservative.

In one or two of them I am slightly liberal leaning, if anything.

I'm a conservative.

Very conservative on national defense and most social issues.More liberal/moderate on the economy.

Definitely none of the above - I'm an equal opportunity cynic when it comes to the main political parties in the US. I have been "accused" of being both a liberal and a conservative so I guess the terms are relative.

The options have got nothing to do with political parties, and certainly not ones in the United States. Nor does the term 'Socially liberal' and 'Socially authoritarian' ask whether you are a liberal or conservative, they ask if you generally put yourself on the left or the right, i.e. for or against, on social issues, such as abortion, euthanasia, *edit* etc. (If you put yourself directly in the middle, tick 'Other')

This poll is about personal ideologies, not party affiliations.

EDITED EDIT* Just realised the last example doesn't work at all... It's a rather complicated concept and I'm rather tired. Anyhow, I hope I've shed a little bit more light...

In the US "conservative" is generally associated with belonging to one party - and "liberal" is generally associated with belonging to the other - so they have come to be synonymous in people's minds.

And what is the difference between "left" and "liberal" or "right and "conservative"

Authoritarian is not a term I use with politics - I did put other because I didn't find an acceptable choice.

Edited....okay I just checked out some political ideology quizes. I love this answer,

I am a

radical-leaning capitalist-leaning libertarian

I think this diagram shows is best:

bothaxes.gif

The liberal - authoritarian (or whatever you want to call it) axis is based on the social scale, whether you believe in generally promoting or limiting social freedoms. The left - right axis is based on the economic scale, whether you believe in a planned/regulated economy or a free market. (That's a very rough outline, but the gist is there)

The use of the word authoritarian in this context imo makes the most sense, since when we really break things down we're talking about promoting or limiting civil liberties, imposing authority or taking it away.

EDIT* Sweet title. If you have the time I'd recommend checking out this site, it's good, accurate and pretty famous. Well, as famous as a website can be!

I've just realised that this reply actually makes some sense, which is more then can be said for my previous one...

I took the quiz - these tests seem determined to convince me I'm a libertarian (but I'm not)

Economic Left/Right: -2.50

Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: -0.67

Still there were questions which really didn't have an answer that fit me. I'm pretty close to the center particularly on the libertarian/authoritarian scale

I consider myself moderate to liberal. Some of my views on society would be considered liberal ( affirmative action, environment) and some conservative ( moral values questions). Same with the economy. I chose other, because I do not see myself as authoritarian or liberal...I don' t fit the diagram.

I am a registered Democrat, but have on ( rare) occasion voted for Republicans.

I'm socially Conservative, though I'm probably moderate on issues concerning the economy.

I am registered a Republican, but will not vote for any candidate (of any affiliation) who supports abortion.

I'm a right wing, gun toting, child spanking, death penalty supporting, abortion opposing republican. I usually subscribe to traditional conservative doctrine, lower taxes, more military spending. and then there's that general opposition I have to the welfare system....

TUH, I don't think you'd be classed as a Libertarian, you're pretty close to the centre...

(I should really have put more poll options, oh well )

I put myself as a progressive/social liberal, which essentially means that I strongly believe in the main ideals of liberalism, but that I also lean to the left. (There are also many right-wing variants of liberalism) I espouse the usual liberal ideals, strong social freedoms, tolerance of all others et all, but I also believe in things like equality of opportunity, where in a fair and free society everyone should have equal opportunities to succeed or fail.

I also believe in a government-regulated economy, minimum wage, and a progressive tax system, where the amount of income effects the percentage of income tax paid, all of which are leftist ideals.

Incidentally, equality of opportunity is not the same as equality of income, which is a socialist belief.

I'm with you, Phaserman. Let's see, we tote guns, believe in spanking our child (and in corporal punishment in the public schools ... doing away with it was the beginning of the end of discipline in that forum).

We're all for lower taxes and more military spending.

We'd like to see the elimination or complete overhaul of the welfare system in this country (I think the government should expect work out of these people for the money they are giving them, even if they have to create the jobs out of thin air.... pick up trash, mowing, painting, general labor in exchange for all the free money). And I mean with a foreman in charge of the work and accountability for the work. We're not teaching welfare recipients anything about how the world should really work ... the world WORKS for a living.

Abortion, however, is really a non-issue for me. I'll keep voting for conservatives, but their stance on abortion doesn't matter to me one way or the other. The way to eliminate abortion is for the people of this country to find their moral center en masse ... for the media to stop promoting sexual promiscuity and for the people to stand up and say enough is enough, sleeze-queens, put your clothes back on. For mothers and fathers to stop purchasing clothing for their daughters with writing across the rear-end, high-heeled flip-flops for elementary aged girls, and paying for piercing and tatoos for the minor children.... you get my drift.

The test says social libertarian. Well, I'm in the SPD (socialdemocratic Party of Germany) - so I guess it's a pretty good test. Except for some very obvious questions.

(The SPD is the party that will lose the elections in September. )

I consider myself right-wing on some issues, and left on others. If i had to choose one, though, I'd say I'm more right. I'm also a registered Republican, but when it come to elections, I vote for who I feel would do the better job.
