Decent episode, but sadly let down by a miserable sub-plot.

The Data storyline was very good as he adapted to his new environment after suffering a radiation accident. I loved the way he created new scientific instruments from relatively basic elements and technology. Superb.

Unfortunately the subplot featuring Counselor Troi becoming a Commander is absolutely nonsense. Did they really expect us to believe that this boring miserable character only needed to order a holographic character to his death to gain a promotion? To be honest, I never really bought the idea that she could make it to Lt. Commander.

Deanna Troi became a Commander, while Data and Geordi were still Lt. Commander?

Yeah right. :(

I gave it a 4. I actually enjoyed the Troi storyline. That was a great twist to add with the engineering test. Could someone as compassionate and empathic as Troi actually do something like that? Not outside the holodeck, but it was still very well-acted. Data's storyline was really good too, though the schoolteacher got on my nerves.
